Ridgeway is flat out a great place to camp I stayed there five or six times over the past 10 years. It is our go to campground when were in that area

There are really no bad sites in any of those loops. For tent camping, my preference is loop D or E. For those in RVs, the full hookup sites just below the dam are very nice.

Yes I have been to ridgeway and would recommend it. They offer a number of different areas and options for tents to rvs. It's close enough to ouray and we can still coordinate with each other on plans.

Ok CAMPERS. Primitive or Ridgeway? Is this everyone who is planning to camp? It looks like we probably have 5-8 camping so far:

@619TOY + ?
@kreiten +2?
@DawnC
@steenh
@Willy beamin +1?

Strong Maybe and if so, camping:
@pdxlc200 +?

We can be self sufficient so I don't mind primitive but is anyone helped by going to what sounds to be a pretty awesome campground? I think @DawnC and I have camped at a campground once or twice in the last 20yrs but it looks like they've picked a great spot for this one.

I'm cool with either but would lean toward primitive! oh and it's kreiten +3 now, got another backseat driver:)

4J is not really rough. It's just a lame RV park where your shoved in tight and have no space. The bathrooms were orderly last time I stayed there. (2007) That said I don't ever plan to go back as it's not my style.

100s in the hills camp at Ironton Park if you guys want to check that out as well.

We will be kicking off the 1st Official 2HIH in 2016 and hope some of you will join us.

100s in the Hills has been a huge success and we're excited to continue the tradition with the 200 Series. This in no way is a competing event, just something we've been planning for almost 15 months. We just could not lock down the logistics, permits and sponsors for this year.

I'm fine with either as well, but wouldn't mind a shower so RW would be my first choice, but not a problem at all if the majority want to go primitive.

You gotta have a 200 to throw a 200 event.

You gotta have a 200 to throw a 200 event.

I only somewhat agree with that. Also, the FJ Summit, which is our sister event, only has one FJ Cruiser on staff and is one of the best run events in the country. (It's actually 3 100's and 1 FJ Cruiser)

I hope you'll join us next year and see the type of event we put together. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Toyota has offered to provide us with a 200 for this event for 2015 and I'm doing my best to join you this year. 2HIH 2016 will be a grand event and we have a pretty good track record for holding events in Ouray and the surrounding areas.

I am happy to help with a few areas as you guys finish up your planning for this year.

Ridgway State Park is nice, but a little out of the way for the trails you have listed.
Ironton Park is about 15 minutes south of Ouray (Towards Silverton) on the east side of the highway. It's primitive camping with no facilities.
The campgrounds at Mineral Creek (west on CO7 just north of Silverton) are also nice and there are pit toilets, but otherwise it's primitive.
CO7 is also the route to Clear Lake which is not to be missed. It's one of the most spectacular views in the area.
The Ouray KOA is nice and we've looked at holding our event there, but they just don't have the room for some of our activities during the event.

Chipeta Sun Lodge is a great place to stay for couples.
The Beaumont Hotel in Ouray is beautiful (no kids) and the owner is a Land Cruiser guy.

Showers are available at the Town Pool, the hot springs and even at the gas station/carwash/lodge in Ouray. Prices are $2-$5 for shower rental and are well worth it.

June 18-21 Telluride has the bluegrass festival. Be cool to do both.
This won't work because most of the trails in the area will not be open yet. Because of the elevation, we don't have access to the high country until at least the first week of July.

This year marks the 5th year for 100s in the Hills so we're getting pretty familiar with the logistics, permits and operation of an event in the area. I am also a trail leader for the FJ Summit and Trail Ambassador for Black Bear Pass. Please stop and say hello if you're working your way down Black Bear at this year's Summit. We are happy to help you guys and answer any questions and even direct you to the right contacts for getting the things you may need while you're here. The 2016 2HIH event will be run and led almost exclusively by 200 Series Land Cruisers. (Unless there happens to be a merger between HIH and 2HIH, which we seriously considered this year) The idea would be to have 100 and 200 Series runs, but camp together as one. This helps with permit costs, sponsor reach and brings together two outcast groups in the Land Cruiser world.

Damn. I had visions of creeping down black bear pass and roll into telluride as Sam Bush started to jam.

Thanks @paflytyer

Researching primitives yesterday and going through each of your suggestions it seems reserved and primitive/dispersed don't go together in that area. Is that correct? With people coming from three coasts it may be rough to roll in on a first come basis? Any ideas on where 4-6 trucks could park up that would be available on the holiday weekend?

If not, it seems Ridgway is worth the 13mi travel with a reservation?

Thanks again for relaying your experience.

I can appreciate you trying to start a 200 event. The main reason I wanted to get something going for us was to meet other 200 owners and enjoy the great outdoors as a group.

I have attended the FJ summit 4 times which was the first years put together. I feel now it fills up so fast and if you don't get registered you can't go/attend. Got a little too serious for me although I had a great time the early years.

With that said very much looking forward to our event and having a good time.

Reserved would be something like Ridgway State Park and the Amphitheatre which is also nice, but still just a camping spot that needs to be paid for and reserved. South Mineral Creek is dispersed camping. It says no toilets, but there is a pit toilet near the highway. All of those areas do see a fair amount of use. The HIH headquarters is Ironton Park, which is dispersed camping with no facilities at all. We rent everything that we need to make this a makeshift headquarters for 3 days. With that being said, I would be very surprised if you could not find a spot at Ironton for 5 or 6 trucks.

I have camped at Ridgway State Park before, but since it's a state park and most of the attendees will be from out of state, it gets pricey. Most Coloradans will have the State Park Pass which is $70 for the year, but you will pay $7 per day (plus your clean water sticker) just to get in the gate. Then you have to pay your camp fees.

The bonus is the extra activities that can be found there though. The Uncompahgre River runs through the park and if you're a fly fisherman like I am, this is worth the price of admission. The river gets hit pretty hard right there, but I have always caught nice fish. There are hiking trails, picnic tables, a swim beach, etc. The other bonus is the close(r) proximity to Owl Creek Pass which is nothing more than a dirt road, but a great drive. (pic below) The downfall is that you're 30-45 mins away to most of the trails that are listed in this thread. The Amphitheatre is only about a mile outside of Ouray and South Mineral Creek is about 5 miles from Silverton.

I'm happy to pass along some of our favorite places to eat in the area too. Again, I'm hoping to make this event and I'd love to lead a trail or two. Black Bear is not difficult obstacle-wise, but it's one of those trails where you want someone to lead it that has done it before. It sounds like there are guys planning on attending that have experience in the area. Poughkeepsie Gulch is the only trail listed where you'll hit a slider or a bumper. You'll want everyone on something other than street tires too. The sharp rocks in the area are tire eaters.

Those were the exact reasons why 100s in the Hills was created. Hoping you'll be involved with 2HIH next year.

Ok CAMPERS. Primitive or Ridgeway?

We're good with either, but I just talked to the :princess: and her preference is campground for this trip. If we can all decide by Friday the 12th, we're happy to reserve a spot online if possible. Otherwise we'll be in Ireland for a week and a half, so if the decision for campground is made during our trip, I would gladly PP the funds to someone if they could nab us a spot too:D

And it'll be me, the wife and the two hounds...

I am excited to announce that Christo and @sleeoffroad have generously sponsored our event! Unfortunately they won't be able to attend this year but they will be taking care of our kick off party Friday night Sept 4. The Beaumont Hotel will section off their Courtyard 6-10pm for us. They offer awesome homemade BBQ. Slee will provide food, drinks and goodie bags (Sorry guys, Slee sliders don't fit in goodie bags). Please make sure I have you confirmed on Post #1 and I also need your T-shirt size.

Most of you already have purchased products or spoken with the team at Slee so please be sure to thank them as they are a perfect partner for our 200's.
