Lean drop in the works tonight, wish me luck tomorrow. If it FAILS again, we get to see how well Toyota engineered against Glock .45 ACP and Ruger 30-06.

PASSED...the pre-test.

Upon "real deal" test, EGR---Failed.

Not a problem, I have 2 spares. Swap it on and get that sticker!!

The numbers looked like a frickin Prius!!

FAILED the "real deal" test, I am now labeled as a Gross Polluter...

EVERYTHING was great, except CO(%) at 2500RPM was at 2.84. max is 1.2.

Looks like I get to go through the AI system again...

Funny thing is 4 hours earlier all was great, except EGR.

So, I took off the EGR, cleaned up the tube to the intake. Found a huge carbon build up, hence the reason the EGR failed. Don't know what changed after that, but with the EGR now in the loop of things, the rig now has a slight hesitation.

My shins are sore from kicking trees, think I'll take a break from this thing for the rest of the day. sigh.:censor::bang:

Same problem I have. I am way too rich at 2500, and a little lean at idle. I don't know if smaller jets will help bring it leaner at 2500. It is easy to adjust the idle up a little. Which speed are you not passing? Now another thing is if your smog pump is working it is throwing your #s way off and showing lean.

I am disappointed in "previous owners".

Found some time to tinker with the AI system again and was on my way to remove the check valve in front of the air rail. I removed the air bypass and smog pump inlet hoses.

For some reason, I decided to cup my hand around one end of the inlet hose and blow through it. CLOGGED...

So, I look at side that goes to the air cleaner and some jackwagon decided to stuff a piece of very hard plastic in there. Looked like a lens cover for some small light.

I don't know his intentions, but I know my smog pump won't work without air getting to it. Broke it with a rubber mallet and put everything back together.

All new belts and a MUCH quieter engine compartment!! Short drive around the block yielded an ear to ear smile. I want to go through the Emissions Manual one more time to check the ABV.

After that, I guess it's time for Smog Test #6.

You are becoming one of the smog guru's here. And just a couple months ago you were lost. let us know how it goes. I sill haven't touched mine.

Really excited about what I found this morning. More previous owner wrongs...

After watching Spike Strip's thread, I decided to tear into my relief valve and open up the air bypass valve, found a bunch of sticky build up. Started my tests again, ie. CHECK VTV AND ASV. Still could not get air to come out of the bypass hose. After some head scratching, I tracked down the culprit.

My VTV was not connected to VSV(1) Port F.

I'm going to run some BG cleaner through my block this afternoon and re-test as soon as I get a chance. Today is "Cesar Chavez" day, DMV took the day off, so legally, I can't drive on public roads without the one day pass.

Guys, I'm so happy that they even don't do an exhaust gasses test here, or whatever you call it over there. When my cruiser was ready, it had to do the annual it's-safe-now-to-allow-you-on-the-road test. In Holland it was a disaster for older cars, especially the carbon test, but here...:bounce::confused::D:p:clap:
They want to see if your wipers, lights and horn work, and then... and then... nothing!!! They even didn't check my brakes, which they should. The car I had before, a Chevy Silverado, even had a few suspension leaves broken, but they didn't see it!
Last year the police wanted to introduce the carbon test and all, but the government cancelled it, because the fuel is so bad here that even a new Land Cruiser 200 with cats won't pass the tests. One of my Dutch friends here has a Land Cruiser 100. If he uses the local diesel, the computer gets completely loco. But even Shell and Texaco mix their diesel (which isn't A-class fuel over here) with the Surinamese diesel.
Btw, those extreme smog tests? One exploding vulcano somewhere in the world does more damage than all cars together.

When I bought mine from an old hippie in north Washington state it stunk like bigfoot’s rear until I pulled out the seats and all the carpet too. It makes a big difference replacing the jute under the carpet. Found three old dried up joints and a handful of beer bottle caps trapped in the back seat heater intake. Bonus. Nice project friend.

FINALLY PASSED!!

I have to thank Cruiserfj45, JimC, but especially IH8MUD members for helping me get through this. Without this forum, I would have spent a fortune getting it right.

Now it's time for a decent radio and fix the awful squeak somewhere in the dash. Then the usual roof-rack, bumpers, sliders and lockers.

Way to go. Now that that's done everything else is a cake walk. What were your #'s? Do you want to come down and work on mine? Ill get mine to pass some day. Probably not until I finish the fire academy.

I got mine to pass about 3 weeks ago. I completely went through the Air injection system, rebuilt the carburetor, rebuilt the smog pump, valve adjustment, oil change, and fixed about 5 vac leaks. And it still runs like a champ. My #s were 0 on the CO and HC was half of the average measured. Now it is down to fixing some of the oil leaks.

Sweet, it's about time!!

All I've done to mine is mount some Dick Cepek lights. They are very bright.

I also bought an M101A1 Military trailer to use for a utility/camping trailer. I want to swap out the axle in favor of 6 on 5 1/2.

Still have not driven 30 miles from my house. Driving without a/c is a real bummer when the family is with you (still hitting 100 up here) Especially with a newborn.

HOW OFTEN DO WE NEED TO GO THROUGH THE SMOG JUNK?

I really don't want to do this EVERY 2 years...

Congratulations on the new addition to the family. You definitely need to get that A/C working. I have everything to keep it R12. You just need to go though the system and replace all the o-rings and the receiver dryer.

You should check all the smog stuff every time you get it smoged but it wont need to be fixed all the time. Just check the hoses and apply vacuum to the diaphragms and make sure they haven't cracked. The stock emissions equipment usually lasted for 10 - 15 years.

Finally took the rig on a real road trip. I had not had the time to actually take the rig on a 250 mile trip yet.

My only complaints are the bump-steer and lack of power on big hills. I'm so used to my Tundra's V8, the 60 feels like a tractor.

I may go ahead and install the shims I have in the front and double check my toe-in. I'm sure it won't hurt to have the tires re-balanced as well.

All things considered and everything I went through, the rig drives way better now.
