New oem manual FJ62 mirrors (USA, still available, chrome) have the best visibility & don't knock out of position like the 70 series.

The only thing going for the 70 series mirrors is that they are black and "exotic". Every time a branch (or person in a parking lot) bumps it, it will knock the mirror out of position. Not so with the FJ62 mirrors.

The 62 mirrors swivel on a spring ball detent pivot & snap into the correct position. They pull right in easily and will release (swivel) inwards when you hit a branch or tree. Then once rotated in, they only stick out an inch or two.

But the beauty of them is that they are "breakaway" but you can snap them right back into place AND the actual mirror adjustment is INSIDE the outer shell. So no matter how much they are bumped or accidentally pushed in, the mirror body can just be rotated back to snap into position & the actual mirror inside the housing will not have been tweaked. Adjustment will be perfect as you left it.

They are by far the most functional land cruiser mirror. Some guys don't like the chrome (you can paint them) or the size (size is perfect for me) or they get the euro spec or 70 mirrors because those are less common so are a curiosity. But those mirrors will get out of adjustment every time they get bumped. The passenger side FJ62 mirror has a convex lens to give you a wider view on that side.

I have heard that the aftermarket (not Toyota) FJ62 mirror copies (which look like the originals) can rattle. The oem mirrors don't.

I run the 70 series mirrors and think they're the bee's knees. No experience with the stock 62 manual mirrors.

I've had both the 62 mirrors and the 60 eurospecs. I personally prefer the eurospecs, but YMMV. No experience with the 70 series mirrors.

The 62 mirrors are noticeably larger than the eurospecs. At least on the driver's side, I haven't felt any loss of visibility because both of the eurospecs are convex (there's no left and right, they're both the same). This did take some time to get used to. I haven't had any issues with the eurospecs being unstable at speed.

The eurospecs tuck in just as well as the 62 mirrors, if not slightly better. As OS says, you do have to readjust the eurospecs every time you pull them in or if they get bumped.

Both feel equally durable. My 62 mirrors are at least 22 years old and still look pretty good.

I really like my Euro models, and they have held up to quite a bit of abuse from branches and brush. Mine are rock solid no matter the speed.

Possible the woblers are the aftermarket models?

62 mirrors on my rig. Zero vibration and excellent coverage.

great thread!

so you're happy with the stability of view of the 70 series mirrors at speed @gilamonster?

I have run the euro mirrors and they're great. I have also run the 62 series manuals both OEM and aftermarket...the OEM mirrors are the bomb, the AM versions look good parked, but OMG flashid assbacks at speed. I keep expecting them to simply fall off their stubs at 70...

That said, those 70 series offerings from @cityracer seem to be a good alternative for those of us who can't afford the OEM fj62 mirrors...

I've had a set of 70 series mirrors on one of the 60s for about 15 years and they have been, and still are, rock solid. At the time I was able to pick up the mirrors cheaply as take-offs from Canadian mine trucks. From reading this thread I think the answer is go OEM in whatever version you prefer, Euro-spec, 62 manual, or 70, and you'll not be disappointed.

Before the 70 series mirrors I had a set of euro-spec style aftermarket mirrors from CCOT. Those things were a complete waste of $$.

Hey J, you got any pics? and yes,,,OEM brand is what I've learned...

My 70's mirrors don't move on the highway at all, or on washboard dirt roads. One of the best upgrades I've done. Also, if anyone is interested check out MegaZip.net - New Genuine OEM Japanese Parts Online Store. City racer was out of stock when I was looking to order. I got both mirror's/extra gaskets/new bolts from them for $160 shipped.

Been running the Euro spec mirrors I got from @reevesci. I've had encounters with branches with no issues, and the scratches buff out easily. Only had to slightly tighten the tension nut on the passenger side to keep it from moving. Previously used aftermarket ones from MAF, pretty much junk.
