Pulled into the liquor store for my Sunday 40oz of OE and noticed the engine was idling a bit rough. Saw that the OD off light was blinking (OD was on though). Turned the OD off and drove away and seemed to be idling fine. On the way home I noticed the speedo is also not working...what gives?
I bought my 93 with O/D light flashing and shifting normal. I stopped to gas up for the long drive home and it would not go into reverse. And the story goes on with lots of inconsistancies over the next month until it finally had to be driven by shifting it manually. Loss of speedo was part of it. Once I replaced the faulty solenoid, all went back to normal.
Don't buy the solenoids from Toyota. Your trans is an AisinWarner unit which also has Volvo applications. The solenoids can be had for around $50 each. Google AW450-43LE.

Thanks Baldi...trying to narrow this down before the wallet begins hemorrhaging! @cc93cruiser I saw your thread from 2010...same issues, what was your fix?
Have you used the diagnostic port to see what code(s) it's throwing? I had three codes but ended up replacing only the shift 2 solenoid and cleaning the others out with with compressed air.

Speedo gets its signal from the speed sensor in the transfer case. I never replaced my speed sensor and the speedo started working again once the solenoid issue was resolved. This remains a mystery to me.
Do things in a simple way...check your speedo ground (I had to give it a better one)...the code will start after you get the car up to a certain speed...as for the selenoids not working, check them with your own 12V...is easy...also, I agree with baldilocks get the AW450-43LE if you need them, I would replace them all if I buy them, not too expensive either so freshen up the things, and while you are at it, replace the filter...
No, the sensor on the tcase. On mine, I pulled the sensor and the little square drive had broken so it was obvious to me that was my problem. If I were you I'd just pull it to see if it's something obvious like that.
