Everyone's got different ways of looking at things, but if it were me, I'd replace the water pump. It could very well be new, but it also could have been sitting for a very long time. Seals can dry out and bearings can get corroded. Since you're this far taken apart (and with water pumps being comparatively cheap parts), there's no way I wouldn't replace it now. Generally, they won't fail catastrophically.....but they can (i had a bearing go bad in one once, and it twisted the entire nose piece off of it) Therefore, since you're uncertain of its condition / age, I'd replace it. It's cheap insurance against getting stranded......or worse, not paying attention to the gauge and overheating it.

Just my $0.02

Ha...funny you say that. I ordered this earlier today:

16100-61012 - OEM Toyota PUMP ASSY, WATER

Thanks for the input, that's exactly why I post here...to draw on the knowledge of people who know what they are doing!

Smart

OK, think i might have just messed up. I opened up the fuel pump...mistake? Don't think there are any serviceable parts in there.

In any case, gasket was in bad shape. See attached. Does the entire unit need replacing? If so, ugh, that's a $200 part...but i guess it's better to find now than later.

Last questions for a while:

1. What the hell are those rings that are with the distributor?? Showing my ignorance. Sending the unit back for rebuild tomorrow.

2. I figure i can use gas to clean the fuel pump (unless I'm replacing), but is there any solvent out there that I can scrub the other parts with that won't hurt anything?

Fuel pump options are OEM for $200 from multiple sources, Kyosan for $115, or Carter? for $60...

Didn't Kyosan make a bunch of the OEM parts?

Kyosan for the win. Not sure aboiut the 2 rings, the paint splatter on the DUI really isn't a big deal (its gonna get nasty anyway) I'd just check wires, connections and call it good. If you are gonna clean it iuse mineral spirits and keep it away from wires and connectors

Yes Kyosan is on the top of the OEM part I bought from TRDparts4u.com. Call Jacque and the part is $125 from them (they are Toyota of dallas). Lee posted that he bought the same pump from NAPA for $60. Might check there first. Make sure the gasket comes with the pump. Mine didn't.

Ask Bodean to chime in on the fuel pump. He has very recent experience.

 He's too quick.

Thanks guys. I already have a gasket on the way. I will get a Kyosan on the way from one place or another tomorrow.

do you mean the two seals next to the distributor? they look like marlin crawler inner axle seals

That makes sense. Have several sets of those seals. Don't know why they were in box w dizzy tho.

Kyosan makes Toyota's FJ40 fuel pumps. Buy the same Kyosan pump from NAPA for well under $100. I just bought one last month. IIRC it was around $50. I posted the price in the 40 thread in a conversation with Bodean. Show your AAA card at NAPA and get a 10% discount off list price.

Edit: Just checked the price. It was $46.79 after the discount, at my local NAPA, for a '75 FJ40.

Part Number: NFP M60098
Product Line: NAPA Fuel Pumps
$51.99

Gonna check with them now.

Neither of my NAPA stores have this part...they say they have switched over to AirTex...

By the way Lee, been following the Rustbucket thread...outstanding stuff.

Here's my experience. NAPA stores carry the AirTex fuel pump on the shelf, but they still stock the Kyosan in their warehouses. That's how I got mine. The store clerk acted like it was a big PIA to order it for me, but he finally gave in and I picked it up within 48 hours. It came out of their Dallas warehouse. It's also still listed in their on-line catalog. Hopefully if you're persistent, they'll get one for you.

Thank you Sir. Which reminds me, I need to get busy on the next chapter.
