Ok, some more newb help is needed...

Putting the new tie rod ends on, as well as a new tie rod.

I've got the ends tightened all the way into the new tie rod, but when I put in place the total length is way too long...

The tie rod is exactly the same length as the old one (just not bent, old bent one is first pic).

What am I doing wrong??

After 6 weeks of not being able to do any significant work, got back out to the shop today. Good day for wrenching in an enclosed shop...rain this AM cooled things down, and was overcast here most of the day.

Got all of the steering components re-assembled and on the truck after cleaning on some and powdercoating on some others. New hardware/bolts wherever possible.

Decided to put the manual steering box back on for now, will tackle the power steering job another day. one step at a time.

Sorry for all the IPhone pics...forgot my camera.

After I finished the steering work (after taking 100 pics) I pulled all the peripherals off the engine, sanded down the block, and painted it. Turned out great, I think anyway...

Question...what color should I get the valve cover powdercoated? Black? Or was it a diff color OEM?

Finally, here's the parts I'm taking back to the house to clean up/recondition.

Distributor looks like it's had it, but Rob sent an aftermarket unit with the sale, will switch to that.

Fuel pump looks good too, will clean it up, replace gaskets, and replace in-line filter.

As long as the alternator tests OK, gonna just clean it up.

Going to disassemble the thermostat housing and replace the thermostat and all gaskets.

Water pump looks good, new gaskets only.

Belt is OK, but probably going to replace it while I'm in here. Will probably wind up replacing the fan as well...it's got black spray paint all over it.

Also new heater hoses all around.

Questions: The oil filter appears to be rusted onto the housing...I cant budge it. I can order a new housing, but really don't want to. Any tips on popping that off?

I'm REALLY wanting to test this engine out soon, before I get all the wiring harnesses, etc, all hooked back up. Any way to do that?

Finally, if anyone sees anything I'm doing wrong or something I'm missing, please tell me!

Looks incredible. great work. I would go black on the valve cover...that's my opinion. not sure what it was stock. someone will chime in though. keep it up!

Valve cover was aluminum. No paint. They shine up real nice if u use a buffing wheel.

Have you tried heat....maybe heat it up to melt gasket. Be careful and not catch on fire.. keep a bucket of water close to put it in if needed

Just got it off...had it soaking in PB blaster for a couple hours, then bolted the housing to my workbench for stability and it popped right off.

Got all the parts laid out on the bench at home...wish I knew enough to recognize OEM or not...all but the alternator APPEAR to be original, but I could be way wrong.

Water pump is crazy clean...just have to scrape some of the old gasket and sealer off the back, clean her up, and she's good to go.

Dizzy looks as bad as the water pump does good. Rob, can you chime in on what brand/type of Dizzy you included with the sale? Would I be better off switching to that or replacing OEM?

Thermostat housing interior....extremely clean, gaskets look brand new. This and the water pump have to have been replaced...not way 37-year old parts look like this.

Gonna go ahead and replace the Thermostat, even though it looks new.

Question: do i need to be using some type of liquid sealer, etc, in addition to the gaskets? Everything i pull apart looks like it had some tube-based sealer applied.

fairly certain rob included a Davis Unified ignition. Performance Distributors - High Performance and Racing Ignition Systems They are out of memphis and could rebuild it for you. I would go with it over the one pictured. you simplify by getting rid of points and a few other things I believe. Im no SME on it but that's what I did.

it gives you an internal coil and is water proof. Toyota Landcruiser DUI Distributor

Thanks Shush, that's exactly the one he included. I'll grab it and check it out closer tomorrow.

talk to Andy...he sent his back to them and they rebuilt it for him. I think I remember Rob saying that his worked but I can't remember. (FYI I haven't seen Rob on here much lately so you may want to call him)

Just talked to them...only $49 + any parts they use. Gonna send it off today.

I always use a little RTV with gaskets. It keeps stuff lined up and is a little extra insurance on leaks.

Good work!

Thanks, will make sure to do that.
