Hello fellow mudders been stalking you guys for about 2 years now before i made an account on here while i searched for a somewhat local pig that i could buy. Well obviously i finally found it, and so did some of you other mudders. lol. Well on to the Pig!

She lived her life previously in Colorado where the owner i bought it from picked her up and drove it back up here to Rapid City a little over 6 months ago. While in Colorado she had a Chevy 350 transplant, 73 Landcruiser front disc brake setup, 78 LC 4 speed transmission, and a Ranger underdrive installed. Was still a little rough at that point. The guy i bought it from did a few things here and there to just make it a little nicer, had the radiator and rear heater core rebuilt, had some alignment stuff done, and for the most part just drove it.

Now it comes to me, Im a hobbiest at heart, i have been buying and selling cars since i was 13 years old. This will now make car # 32 for me. Ive done anything from building race cars, to just restoring some vehicles, so i have the knowledge. To get the Pig i made a promise to my wife i wouldnt buy another car for at least another 3 years, so im stuck with her for a while at least! Upon bringing her home my wife dubbed her "Sea Unicorn" (long story) So thats her name (or Narwhal for short).

Back to the Fj55. Here she is, (i'll update this with better pictures, i got here home at dusk.)

She needs a bit of work despite her first glance appearances. Everything thats on the bottom outside of the Pig has rust (you know... the common stuff.) This will eventually need bottom fenders, rockers, and rear quarters, along with the bottom of the rear gate, And of course body mounts. I have already been in contact with Bobm to remedy this problem, and hopefully within the next few months i can have a slew of parts heading this way (for starters body mounts, and rear quarters) Im still pretty torn on the rockers. Not sure if i want to just make myself some nice frame sliders and cut out the rockers and install them, or do a rocker replacement. Anyways, noticed this is getting long, i'll shorten this up and just make a quick list of things i plan on getting done on this.

The plan:
Repair body rust and repaint
New 33 or 35" tires
Mild lift
Replace the old 350 with a newer 5.3 Vortech
Rear Disc conversion
Replace all weather seals

I'll explain my expedition build a little later, that gets a little more involved ;) Sorry for the long first post, and hope to see you guys on here for years to come!

You've got a great pig, to start with. It's going to be hard, to start taking it apart. Good to have you on MUD. As you know, this is a group of people, who have a ton of knowledge on the pigs. I've learned alot.

Good Luck, with your quest!

Very nice. Glad to see you started a thread too. You have a great starting point.

I didnt see the diamond plate beforehand. How bad is it underneath there?

Rockers are shot for the most part, looks like the body mounts are save-able under the center of the vehicle, rear ones aren't. As far as i can see under the fender diamond plate, the fenders seem saveable too.

Quick question for you mudders that have the 4 speed transmissions. Typically a transmission has two springs that go side to side to reduced "slop" in the shifter (mounted at the base of the shifter inside the trans) Do these transmission have this? Because mine rattles around like nobodys business!

Also are these four speed transmissions straight cut gears? Seem really loud when driving (not sure if its mostly the throwout bearing going out, im assuming not.)

A non-update update:

Havent got started on fixing anything major yet on the Pig, just enjoying it. Taken a few small trips with it (50+ mile round trip drives) Figured i would update this with atleast something lol.

First one is just daily driving to work...People at work instantly knew it was mine as im the only one that picks the "oddball" vehicles to drive. (I work at Jeep. lol so i get hassled alot!)

This was a drive to Custer, SD, about a 35 mile drive one way from my house through the hills.

And this series of pictures was from today, went to Sylvan lake, SD. Which is close to custer, so about the same amount of drive, just more through winding roads of the hills. Love this rig!

If you look really close you can see the Pig through the rocks :D

Thanks guys, hopefully the next set up updates will actually be a real update. probably wont be until spring though. Have some basement finishing to do first which is taking up all my free money...UGH...rather spend it on the pig lol

Well, this isnt an update, but more a place to put my thoughts so other people can help me if they seem off.

Over the last few months i have been thinking of what all to do for lifts and axles to keep everything reliable and strong. I think i have a fairly good start on what i want to do. List thus far:

FJ80 free floating front and rear axles (4:10's with front and rear electric lockers) hopefully i can find these somewhat locally and not pay an arm and a leg.

New rims (probably some generic aluminum 17x9 rims)

37x12.50x17's bf goodrich km2's (driven on the plain KM's with my other toyota's and loved them assuming these should be "similar")

Not 100% solid on which springs to go with yet, posibly FJ60 springs front and rear, Or maybe FJ60/80 springs rear and a full coilover setup front. (similar to landcruisnman's) depends on how much i have to spend at that particular moment.

Any thoughts?

Also for a "visual" reference this is similar to the look im going for, realize its a JK, (from my work) but love the look and stance of this (if you want specs i can tell ya :D )

Drove the Pig to work a few days ago and upon walking away and looking back (yea i like it enough to always look back lol) and realized the body "lean" is getting worse. So its time to tackle that really soon. Took some pictures of what im going to have to deal with.

passenger side front body mount (where the lean is coming from) as you can see its blocked up by a chunk of 2x4.

This is my rear body mount. Havent fully decided a solution for this yet as i dont think there is a "patch" for them. I think i remember seeing someone on here totally rebuilding the corner and boxing it in, not sure who it was though.

So whats the best method of taking care of the welds that hold the front body mounts? Just a spot weld cutter, or just grinding? Priced out the front pieces from BomM a few months ago, and will probably be pulling the trigger on the 1st for the body mount pieces. Think as far as my rockers (which are shot) im just going to do some 4x4 square tubing and make a rail (believe thats the size the most of you use?)

BTW, thanks again everyone for the insight you bring to this forum. I might not post often, but i read what you guys are doing everyday, and it gives me some serious desire to get started on this. (currently getting ready to sell my other "fun" car so i can get started on this in a big way.

Here's a link to an excellant write up on the corners. You've got some serious work ahead, but alot of the guys have been down that road, so it is doable. Do alot of reading and searching the forums.

Good Luck, Ron
