I’m kind of looking forward to the thread “I got screwed at Overland Expo by Papp Bros—-DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THEM!!”

Then we can all point to this thread...again.

OP will probably be like "After a long 5 minute phone call, I decided to wire transfer 100k the next day. Then John Papp ghosted me. What did I do wrong?!"

I was at the expo this weekend (I live in Flagstaff so I'm lucky) and was super excited to find LC America. My dream truck, suddenly a possibility. I even went home and talked to the CFO with good response. On day 2 I spoke with another vendor that said "Google John Papp, that's all I'll say" and that brought me here. Thank god.

They say they are importing directly from Saudi Arabia, only the big V8 TD 4 door for $85k out the door. They are still deciding between a 25% or 50% down payment. I asked about warranty, service, parts, insurance, etc and they basically responded good questions but TBD. They also told me that they are a licensed vehicle manufacturer and dealer and that recent changes to importation laws allow them to blah blah blah...

There were a handful of other new(ish) 70 series trucks at the expo but they were all sitting on either 80, 100, 120, or 200 series chassis and the chassis' title. Or imported temporarily. Apparently shortening the 80 series frame 16" works to fit the sheet metal.

In conclusion, THANK YOU MUD FAMILY!!! I've been a serial lurker for years and am happy to contribute. -Ben

"No way is this truck legit. But we will happily take your money and tell you it is legit... But in other news, check out my cool LC79 America shirt-- your's free with a $20K deposit. I can guarantee you will get the shirt. And check out my bro-douche flat bill hat that I curved a bit ... That's free too!"

Also, if DOT and EPA approve them for import, what’s to stop me (or another company) from just piggybacking on the DOT/EPA approval and importing my own truck through an RI for potentially less money than LCA?

Can they in some way claim exclusive rights to importing the trucks since they did the paperwork?

The secret black box, bro. The one created by the "genius" of the two(?) Papps.

If this guy has a place of business and has made multiple public appearances and everyone knows who he is, could they really run off with a bunch of money and get away with it? Perhaps I am naive to believe in our judicial system?

Well, you may be naïve. When it comes to civil actions concerning money, our judicial system may work given the right amount of money thrown at it. What I mean is there are scams EVERYWHERE with money and the race to catch them is long and costly. (And may not be worth it in the end.)

A judgment would be easy to win, getting the money back is a different story. Pro scammers like the Papps know what to do. Setup an LLC, put all your cash & assets in your wife's name, fold up shop and say you had the best of intentions. They've done it before.

Yep. Judgments are easy-ish enough when you've got a good case, but, ya, getting the money and/or actual justice is completely different.

I was involved with a suit involving a uship transporter that swindled a bunch of us [dumbasses] into paying full price up front for shipping vehicles etc etc and then the dude just disappeared with everyone's money. Had the DA of Maine actually take the case against the guy. IIRC, there were 10-12 of us that paid the guy up front and never had any goods or services performed. Total was around $35000 between all of us, i think. Case was decided in our favor and judgments ordered for all money plus damages to be repaid. But of course, the dude had taken the money and ran. I've never seen one damn cent back of my $1000 bucks on that one. :-/

In the meantime can someone please create a new logo for the Papps?

Proving “intent” is very difficult...

What we view as “intent to defraud” isn’t always the same in a court’s view...

You are correct. Judgments are easy to get, extremely hard to actually get money back. As a note on judgments, O.J. Simpson was ordered to pay 33 million to the Goldmans, (Now 50 million with interest), and he never paid a cent and will never pay. Businesses that do crooked things know that for you to try and get your 1000.00 dollars will cost more than you would recover. This is where our judicial system fails.

Plus, if Papp has LCA is set up as an LLC, any civil judgement will go against the LLC it’s assets, and the Papps and their personal assets are protected unless you can prove fraud. And once they fold the LLC and declare bankruptcy, you ain’t getting s***.

Yeah, we all know what the Papps are likely trying to do, but to prove them guilty of fraud in court to pierce the protections of an LLC would not be an easy task without hard evidence of intent.:meh:
