Not mine, but supposed 2016 Land Cruiser Double Cab Pickup for sale...

Guy claimed he had 3 new HZJ79's for sale that had been imported and federalized to be legal per EPA and DOT standards. Many people offered to fly up to his "open house" where he claimed he would have a local vendor, display the trucks and provide donuts. Requests for his address were met with insults. Some time later he finally admitted that he had no trucks for sale, after ridiculing everyone and this "dumb" forum, as he called it, for not believing him. Some quick internet sleuthing showed that this guy has been caught in multiple scams for taking deposits on vehicles that never materialized and some kind of real estate scam. Then he said he'd have a legal 70 series at Pike's Peak and we'd all look like idiots. Pike's Peak came and went. A failed gofundme page and angel investor requests later and the company name was changed from L79 America to LC America and the original promoter was replaced by someone who claimed to be his brother. The next claim was that legal trucks would be for sale at SEMA. Then a week before SEMA they admitted they wouldn't be there. But they did post a few pictures of some kids wearing SEMA badges in a hotel lobby. Requests to discuss meeting at SEMA were ignored, I'm pretty sure they weren't actually there. Now they claim to be manufacturing trucks and will have them for sale "soon". I'm leaving out a lot of fun stuff. Despite all this, many of us dream of these trucks and hope their project materializes. However, I'm not aware of anyone holding their breath. If you are looking for 50 pages of fun, there are multiple lies, repeated insults and many unfulfilled claims made by these individual(s). And STILL nothing for sale.
Sounds like someone is dreaming of upsizing from selling non-existent cruisers on Craigslist, to mass marketing of non-existent cruisers on Mud.

Are there that many stupid people who still have some money left, and are they hanging out on Mud? Hey, wanna hear about my new horsepower-doubling thingamabob you clip to your intake in 30-seconds? I know it looks just like an air freshener, but it really works...

Not that I even give a s*** about this train wreck at this point.... but I'm familiar with all that legislation and you are NOT building a kit car with a CARB certified motor. Even if your "Black Box" worked you are still limited to a certain production number and I seriously doubt your required yearly compliance documentation will fly. A "LC79" is simply not an exempted SPMV as HR2675 was written.

The real fear here is this this whole debacle is drawing attention to 70 series trucks that is not needed. Plenty of folks here are waiting patiently for 15 or 25 year old trucks. Crushed trucks mean our microcosm of Landcruiser is under the microscope. This stunt could have implications far beyond forum bickering.

A conveniently vague interpretation of legislation for monetary gain will always be met with trepidation. That this crowd will always call bull**** is one of the reasons I love being part of IH8MUD.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy a 70 series without resorting to con games and nonconformity with federal law. And before folks get on a high horse about how EPA/DOT/NHTSA's rules could be otherwise, remember that by in large, they are designed - and do manage to - keep us all safe on the road.

Fun thread though. Always an interesting read.

Hogwash. Keeping out vehicles that are newer than 25 years old have very little to do with safety or environmental reasons.
**GASP** ...protectionism?? Say it isn't so! Democrats AND Republicans wouldn't have let this continue for decades, would they?

I am new to chit chat section so I need to work on my sarcasm. You guys are not kidding when they say the gloves come off in this part of ih8mud. :)

I think it's all an elaborate "smear" campaign.

:hhmm:

Beno --

Can you help me spec a big brake kit for our fake Land Cruisers? Please let me know.

Thanks,

John.

The brakes are quite adequate on a 70 series. I would not modify the factory braking system without at least driving it for a few thousand miles and then making a determination of braking need based on performance.

The factory system is quite robust and reliable.

But "Factory Brakes" does not sound nearly as cool as "Big Brake Kit".

Perhaps the "Big Brake Kit" is part of the "manufacturing"....

It does sound “fancy”. Been looking at too many Brembo ads I guess, gotta get those buzz words in there for the F/S ad:rolleyes:

I completely disagree about the brakes. While adequate for rock crawling, they are woefully short on power for rally crossing! At least that is the case on the (fake news alert- FNA) 70 that I purchased perfectly legitimately on ebay last summer after attending the amazing (FNA) open house prior to purchase. I don't do Facebook anymore, but wouldn't this make a great game on FB? Build your own LC70 and then compete in virtual offroading competitions or car shows.:D

The original Ebay scam listing was also picked up by several motoring websites.
US-legal Toyota Land Cruiser 70 pops up on eBay
Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Available On eBay With US-Legal Papers [VIDEO]

Even though the Ebay listing is gone, the articles show the tenor and tone. The pictures in the listing were found-online stockish photos.

Since 'news' reporters no longer actually investigate claims, the articles added seeming legitimacy to the claims.

From what I can tell, retractions were never printed. There was no counter story showing that the trucks never existed, have not been made legal (yet?), or that the listing itself was fraudulent.

Individuals claiming to be the source of the listings showed up in this thread and the entertainment factor has been relatively high.

Several of us would really like it to be possible for Unicorns to be real. (I've taken to calling these trucks Unicorns. The listing showed white 79 dual cabs. The later one has a hood ornament.) If somehow they prove it possible to legally import, register and drive these in the US with no fear of seizure and crushing, that would be cool to see - and I wish them luck in that.

I remain duly skeptical though.

Believe the issue with the Land Rovers is they were newer being titled and registered as older Land Rovers. If it has papers showing legally registered as what it really is that's different. I remember a 70 series that was imported from Italy that was too new to import but some high ranking military officer had got it imported. Have the right connections anything is possible.

No doubt the factory system is sufficient in most cases. I suspect that the Patriot -- given the added length and weight and larger tires -- has 4 wheel disk brakes, but I am not certain. Do you know? Are you suggesting that the current disk/drum setup on this specific vehicle is as capable as a full 4 wheel disk setup? This has nothing to do with sales, just safety.

JP.

How valuable would these things really be, if they suddenly were available in large numbers? They would be used trucks without a lot of factory or dealer support. I saw $150k on the possible price...?? More than a G-wagon, new and under warranty with loads of dealer support? Twice the price of a newish Unimog? Four times the price of a new Tacoma TRD Offroad 4-door?
