Need a bit of help

We headed out to Zion this past weekend to give the Kamparoo a shake down run. Living in the LA area it was about a 7 hour trip, and coming into Vegas the outside temp went up to the 100's. I was monitoring the Scan Gage II and my engine temp was ranging between 198 and 210.

Is that a normal range???? Or am I too high???

Highest I have ever seen mine go is 190. That was when I first got my Cruiser and went out to Anza Borrego Desert. It was 109 outside!

I was also in that area (Bryce/Zion/Grand C) this past weekend and it was hot out there, my SG II was showing a low of 193 on the interstate and up to 215 sitting with the AC on in traffic. I have not been above 215 as far as I know. You should be fine, hope you had as much fun as we did!

I stay at a steady 190*
If i am in traffic in middle of the summer, it might climb to 194, but that is the hottest i have seen it.

Mine sits on 85/86 Celsius pretty much all the time with the odd fluctuations here and there.

The hottest I've seen it was 92 C when we had the bush fires in 2009 and the temperature outside was 46/47 C and we had hot northerly winds blowing a gale!! Pretty good I thought.

Well now I'm worried... cruising at 70mph, 90deg ambient my coolant on my Ultra-Gauge reads 221deg. Around town I stay around 200. The dealer I bought it from has a non-OEM water pump installed and I doubt its running Toyota red. What factors affect temperature? Can oil viscosity? I checked my coolant level and it is good.

I'd throw a bottle of Red Line WaterWetter in it and see if that would help any. I added it to every car I tracked (except my 911 for obvious reasons) and it seemed to keep the temp down a little.

We did have fun, Fiance and I are getting married there at the end of September......gives us LOTS of excuses to head back. Trying to get some friends to come along at the end of this month to do the Subway hike.

Toyota red coolant is one of the most important things for your vehicle to stick with OEM requiremenets.
I would drain and fill with the proper coolant. (It's a really easy and straight forward job)
add Mr. T's Long Life or Super Long Life depending on year model. Adding any other aftermarket variables (such as some magic bottles of stuff) just increasing variability in diagnosing your problem.

Is your radiator clean? May want to hit it with a high pressure wash wand...

Ok, I'll have to switch it out. Does anyone know the coolant capacity?

I'm pretty sure my radiator is clean but I will double check.

holy crap toyota coolant is expensive... Do I mix it 50/50 or just pour it right in?

question for those of us without a scan gauge. Where is your indicting needle pointing at said temps. Around town the other day, mine was just slightly above the half way point when it was 107 outside. Any idea what temps are represented by different locations on the gauge?

Slightly about half is probably in the 210 range. The gauge is more or less worthless, tons of slop in the middle.

The stuff I buy at the dealership is premixed.

The Toy coolant guages are notoriously vague. Raventai in the 80's section modded his to be more exact, wonder if you couldn't do the same on a 100. Anyway, to answer your question, when it was hot outside and showing 195* on the SG, the combimeter gauge was showing just under halfway up.
