No HID for me - which replacement bulbs?

Tried the Phillips and they're definitely brighter than the Sylvanias that were in there. I've got a long night trip tomorrow in the woods so it'll be a good chance to test them out. Thanks for all who replied.

I just replaced my Sylvania's with PIAA Intense White for the high/low and fogs and wish I hadn't. While the light is whiter I'm not at all convinced the bulbs are noticeably brighter. I'm not overly enthusiastic about the $149 I spent on them.

150 for light bulbs? Give me your headlights for 2 days and see what I come up with.

I went with Sylvania silver stars in dims, brights and fogs. I think they come in 3 brightness levels, and I chose the brightest. I am happy with them over the stock bulbs-probably the originals and had faded over time-they are reasonably bright for halogen. if you are going to spend money on bulbs, you might as well as go with HID, tho. They are super bright and reasonably priced now. I recall seeing 50 a set on Craigslist and they are plug and play. Simple.

Sent from my EVO using IH8MUD

I had the HIR's before switching to the DDM HID. I was really not impressed and didnt really notice a huge difference.

However, If any one local in San Diego wants to plug a set of HIR's in to see the difference before purchasing a set. I still have mine and carry them as spare in case the HID ever fails. You are more than welcome to come over one night and we can plug them in and you can see before you decide if they are worth it or if you would prefer to go HID.

For the fogs in my ARB I am running Nokya Hyper Yellow bulbs and really like the contrast.

Well..........except they appear to be much less expensive here:

Amazon.com: Philips HIR2 9012 Standard Halogen Headlight Bulb, Pack of 1: Automotive

Update:

I received the bulbs and installed them. They do say HIR2 on the bulbs themselves, but the packaging just says 9012 "Standard". They are noticeably brighter. According to the specs I find, they are 1875 lumens, versus 1000 lumens for the old Sylvania 9006 (best I can tell). Certainly an improvement in "qualitative" terms. For the $40, it's a relatively cheap upgrade to try and takes minutes to install after trimming the one little plastic tab, as others have mentioned.

Now I'm wanting to buy the 9011's, which are only $18 each.

Update: 9011's in as well. Happy with these too !

I replaced both the low and highs in my truck last night and was very happy with the improvement. One thing I noticed was my OE bulbs for the lows had a blacken tip (like my OE fogs). But the Phillips were all clear. I also noticed my OE bulbs for lows were rated at 51 W Sylvannia and the highs were 60 watts; while the HIR replacements were 55W and 65W rated, respectively. I got mine through amazon prime free shipping!

The black tips are for cars without shields in front of the low-beam or fluted glass, to prevent stray light outside of the intended beam pattern. Nice to see HIR are available more widely now, mine are a few years old and going strong running night and day.

What is the best source for HIRs these days?
Did we determine whether the $18 Amazon bulbs by Philips are the real deal?
Thx and sorry for bringing back such an old topic.

I bought the Amazon bulbs last fall and they're the real deal. There's a noticeable improvement in light. Slightly higher K, but not blueish. Very stealth. You won't get flashed. Would definitely recommend it.

The Amazon bulbs look suspect to me.

Went to the thread you linked. Not sure I understand the concern. I've been running mine far a few months now and still happy with them. No issues thus far.
