Manny-Thanks for the info on the wheels, I'm going to get some. That is really outstanding.

Just curious about the rust on all your parts-that's odd for a California truck.

Anyway, see you at Rubithon?

Andrew,
If your referring to the wheels, it's not rust...It's some sort of residue left over from US Wheels manufacturing process (custom BS), easily wipes off.

If it was the surface-rust on springs, tie-rod, etc... It's due to the ocean, always an issue regardless of which state you live in :D

See you on the con.

man you made them look all nice,

i just hit the rough spots and left the rest of the weld alone, give it some traction on the bead.

looks great. ruffstuff???

yup :D Dan makes a nice/affordable kit.

With the recent posts on leaky DIY beadlocks, I didn't want to take any chances :P

btw, your rig came out KILLER...congrats

Originally I was going to use an etching primer, but only found etching solution.

tip - wear gloves when dealing with etching/water solution...ouch

After looking at these pics, I've decided to rattle-can the rings black...
I think they'll look nicer two-tone :D

cleaned up tire beads with a wire brush (outside of back-side, and both sides of front bead)

placed wheel on the ground, and install wheel with some soapy-water
(surprised how easy it was)

through in your balancing media (I used Airsoft pellets) and center wheel on face of ring before installing the ring.

torqued all 35 bolts @10lbs, and call it good...

After some high-speed tests, I was not pleased w/the Airsoft media...and with only one day before Rubithon, I had them mounted as a regular wheel :(

I really like the versatility of these DIY Beadlocks.
Run them as a regular wheel, then switch to a Beadlock system when I upgrade to larger tires.

They worked great on the trail :D

for the record, no air was lost while tires where mounted as Beadlocks...

see you on the trail,
manny

Looks good Manny:beer:

are you just running them as regular wheel now?

look good

thanks cam

regular style until I get bigger tires = SOA

Can you comment on those Cooper tires? How do you like them? Did they balance up nice? I'm thinking they look like a great tire...

Cheers!

Their pattern looks very similar to MTRs

Since this was my 1st trip w/these, I can only say that they are a bit loader then BFG MTs.

they did survive the Con...maybe it's the 3ply sidewall :D

ran them @14lbs.

Hey just a quick question. How do you weld the rock rings to the wheel?

I like the color you chosed. ( darn I hate it when i leave words out)

Alex,
is this a trick question?
1)buy the correct sized beadlock-kit from ruffstuff
2)remove tires and paint from wheels
3)checkout my thread from the beginning :D

short 5-6" beads, alternating 180Degrees...allowing welds to cool before continuing.
let one wheel cool (face down on the shop-floor) while working on another wheel.

required Two complete passes to fill

Thanks George,
will try and get your package out next week...sorry for the delay.

I figured it out. My question was answered by reading the entire thread! I couldn't tell if the ring sat INSIDE the edge or ON the edge. I was like that's some tricky welding man.......

I see now. Very cool.

I just wanted to add that I just purchased these same wheels. They are great. I am SOA with TSL's and my rig was a little top heavy with 4.75" bs wheels, plus I had to adjust the steering stops to keep my outer lugs off the springs. I had 1 1/4" spacers on already, and while they are not needed, they worked great for my rig. They gave me a wider stance and keeps my rig from getting tippy. They also allow me to not have to run steering stops which makes turning on the trail easier. I really dislike spacers too, but this will get me by until I get a set of FJ60 axles. I think that FJ60 axles, SO'ed, and 3 1/8" backspaced wheels would be about perfect.
