Alright..... did I do a bad thing... I mixed 6 ounces of MMO (marvel mystery oil)
With about a half gallon of gas, seemed like a good mix, dumped it into my IV tank and tried starting it. Now all it does is just turn over and over, won't start. Sounds like it's not getting fuel. Like I'm dry starting it in a way, I don't think I messed up the engine at all. My guess is just fouled out the spark plugs. but am I going to be flushing out the motor and gas lines now ?

Alright cruiser question, so all the vacuum lines that run every which way around the top of the motor, are all those lines needed? can I eliminate the whole thing and remove the air cleaner and just mount a filter on top of the carb?

I'd check the coil/igniter. Went through the same thing about a year ago. Would not be surprised at all if those parts are bad. They can go bad overnight, as mine did. Check for spark.

Also, there are quite a few topics on the issue here on MUD

I cleaned the plugs completley, they seemed reusable. I wire brushed them and got them pretty clean, got all the carbon deposits off. going to reinstall tonight and see where that gets me. the coil will be checked next.

got the FJ up and running strong again, but not in the way i expected. I reconnected my sparkplugs and still had no starting, continued doing the same thing before. so then i checked spark at the plug, realized there was no spark, so then i racked my brain some more. checked the distributor everything was good there, then i chased that over to coil, silly me i had it grounded badly and that was the issue.:bang: wire brushed a piece of frame and vise gripped the coil down too it then it started right up.

Now with the mystery oil, i ran the half gallon mix of Gas/mystery oil throw the fuel system, dumped about another half in the oil. ran it for about hour, shut it off for an hour. started it back and you could tell it was a little quieter, the lifters and valves weren't as loud, seemed to be running smooth. plan on doing the same thing tomorrow.:hillbilly:

What should I do about this top? Such a thing as restoring or refurbishing ? Or is it too far gone ?

I would be looking for some new sides personally...

BTW, someone already cut the pieces that slide into your tub (front near the door)

People typically do this because they don't realize that there is a tension bolt on the body tub that can interfere with it.

x2 on the sides - keep the glass and look for cheap replacements, I sold a pair for $100 last year. re the fiberglass top, it is worse than mine was, but not by far - get some long strand fiberglass and you should be able to patch that up - the gutter, based on how rusty everything else is might take some work though - search for repair threads on that, Good luck, mine was in pretty rough shape to start as well - few hundred hours of welding and its on the road :)

If you can fab and weld anything is fixable, I have fixed alot of parts people were ready to throw away. Ohh you can make your own quarter panels, I used 16ga and a oxygen bottle..
I use my local powder coater for sand blasting, He does a whole tub and all the body panels for 300$, Clean metal and I don't have any sand blast mess at the house. You then know what you have to deal with, a sheet of 14 or 16ga is cheep (you can also cut up other body panels for patches, fj60's are my favorite) , straighten the bent tub you have back into shape with a porta power and some patch work and you will have something to work with. Good luck, just keep plugging away you will get there.

Thank you all for the feedback! But I've made a decision on a couple things.

The hardtop will be replaced most definitely, new sides keep the old glass and refurbish the fiber top.

The "New" body will be going to scrap since no one has interest in buying it. I'll be harvesting the seats and seat brackets, gas tank, transmission hump, the full roll cage, and dash knobs. Some of it I'll use, some of it will be up for sale. I'm predicting in about 2 weeks or less I'll have all this done and soon as that happens I'll be off with the scrap yard with it. I hate to see it go but the money will be used wisely. If anyone is interested in it I'll sell for a reasonable deal still, local pick-up only.

Now reason I'm doing this, sure I could weld new panels and such in, but here's why I've gone a different route, the body would be great for a trail rig, I'm wanting something that is both trail and daily. In order to get it a straight body again I'll have to replace the rear quarters all the way up to the kick plate panels, the rockers are trashed and serve no purpose so why weld good metal to them? Did the math and that is way out of my money range to replace all that with new panels. Use other vehicle bodies for patching, Don't have the exact tools for doing such and really the money either. The floors in it are great, completely diamond plated. That was the hard part in making this choice, but the pillar on the passenger side is completely ripped up and booger welded fixed by a back yard mechanic. The whole dash on that side is smashed in as well. Like I said, great trail rig tub but not for me.

I also hit another spot of luck which helped make this choice for the money need. I found a 1970 40 in Kansas I'm going to get after the holidays for one hell of a deal, going to use the money I get from the scrap to get over there and get it and bring her home. This body is a way better candidate for resto. Couple modifications and it will be great!

So that's the current update on what's going on with the build. Any suggestions are welcome! Anyone interested in buying the "New" tub let me know I'd be happy to make a deal!

Thanks!

Also question,

I'm certain it's do-able, but puting brackets and seats from a 78' onto a 70' body. So basically bucket seats instead on bench, I'm sure it's been done and I can do it. But has anyone before me have any advice on how to go about it?

Yes

There may be some small trimming necessary around the stock 78 taillights. I can't remember off hand honestly. Body mounts are the same though.
