Inner fenders 90% done...

Ok, I might have misjudged the whole 90% thing.... lol. Started off by taking out the tranny tunnel and finishing both sides of the floor, that took some time but hey the fenders were almost done right? Yeah.

Fast forward to 9:30 tonight... and both inner fenders are done. Fully welded all the seams, spent days chasing holes in old steel, cut out the rest of the old inner fender, and polished em up. Turned out good.

While I had the fenders off I finish welded all of the mounting brackets and added one on each coil bucket. Not counting the floppy, chopped, rust riddled outer fenders theyre sturdy like a mofo. Filled in the old fender support holes in the frame while I was there and then broke down and "knocked" out the dent in the tail gate..

Shoehorning an bj60 tilt steering column into a fourty is fun! That's what I keep telling myself anyways.....

D

Well, after some major screwing around I got the 60 tilt column fitting in the 40 dash. The top half of the column is bolted to the oe 40 location under the dash and is in turn bolted to the bottom half of the column using the oe 60 locations. I relocated the tilt spring locations so the tilt lever and the tilt column function same as before.

Still have to figure out how to attach the support bearing deal to the firewall. It sticks out about 4" so some bracketry has to be made.... Hopefully get somewhere with that today.

Got the column brackets all finished up and its all bolted in. Looks not half bad and its solid. Just have to find the right size id pipe to extend the intermediate shaftmabob and I should have steering.... Minus the whole power thing for now.

That looks really good!! Damn!!

Have you thought about how you're going to integrate that column's wiring to the 40's harness?

Nope, I prefer not to think that far ahead lol.

Seriously though, the only thing thats really needed is the signal stalk and the horn to be hooked up.. All of the other functions are on the 40 dash and I dont know if I should leave them there of transfer whatever applies to the new column. It would be cool to have the wipers, headlights and windshield washer all in the same place as the sixty.

Have to get my electrical wizard buddy here to go through the mess of wires and tell me whats what.

On a totally unrelated note, Im considering starting on the sliders today for some reason.

Oh and heres a rant for you to enjoy.

Im slowly trying to eliminate the fetal driving position in the 40 and I honestly dont know how ppl can drive these things stock man. Maybe Im just not talented and maybe my contortionist skills need brushing up but I swear to god the fj40 was built for midgets or smurfs or just tiny drivers in general. Im only 5' 11", Id hate to be 6'2".

Ive effed w the seat brackets and pushed the drivers seat as far back against the rear wheel well as I can. Decent improvement that isnt helped by the fact the seat itself has practically no adjustment. So now with the seat moved back and the tilt column its not too bad. Seat all the way back, column tilted one or two clicks down from all the way up.... untill you put the pedal springs in. The goddamed things stick out a foot from the firewall! I started getting flashbacks of trying to plow with the damn thing this winter and my legs cramping up like a mofo....

So now Im thinking about repositioning at least the brake and clutch pedals a bit. Mounting location would stay the same, just some creative cutting and or bending of the pedal arms.... Gas pedal needs to be screwed with too. My original tub came with a throttle linkage and this tub seems to be set up for a throttle cable.

The joys....

No sliders, made steering work instead. Also ordered some brackets and a pulley from orangefj45 to finish off the power steering.

As a 6'4" individual I can relate. The key step is to reverse the front seat mount "foot" and the rear mounts get flipped to (all this is the drivers seat). That moves the seat a good 4" back. That or a custom seat frame to put the seats where you need them. You already addressed the steering wheel - once you get the stock bus wheel outa the way there is a little more leg room between the door and the wheel for your knee. With the seat remounted and a smaller steering wheel the 40 can be "comfortable" to drive. The next step is to ditch the stock seats for some better junkyard buckets or aftermarket suspension seats but that = $$$...

Nice work on the inner fenders. Trailer fenders?

Lol, yeah, one trailer fender cut creatively. Went to princess auto to buy a sheet of steel to make my own but thank god I saw the fender on the way to the steel rack. Cut it in half then bent the ends closest to the firewall 90* and adjusted the angle at the front. Would have never in a million years got that nice radius if I had made em..

I did my own seat pushem back mod but along the same lines. The rear seat mounts are as far back as the wheel well will let them go (ds mount is right against the well) and the front foot mount is pushed back accordingly. I extended the ps side drivers seat mount and left the bracket that goes from ps to ds where it was.

Id love to score a nice set of bmw leathers or something silly like that to throw in there. If I made new seat mounts for new seats I think I could get the seat back another two inches. My problem is with having to lift my foot off the gas pedal then lift it some more and back then up and over the brake pedal. The clutch isnt too bad but Id love not to have to literally lift my foot way up in the air to use it... Gonna measure the pedals in the sixty to get an idea since its out of winter storage as of yesterday. Pedals are comfy in that thing.

Yeah, that adjusts how far out from the firewall the pedal sticks out right? I want to get both clutch and brake a couple inches closer to the floor. Ill take a pic later to illustrate a little better.

Yes, that adjusts the height off the floor. The FSM has measurements for stock trucks. Just make sure you get enough pedal stroke to make the brakes work before the pedal hits the floor...:hillbilly:

Thanks. I'm hoping its an illusion but it is tall lol. Soa height and its sitting on those wheel dollies so that adds another 1.5-2" in the pictures. It should sit at about that height with 36-37" tires. Still a little more weight to weld/bolt on as well.

Got the new double groove crank and water pulleys on, replaced the front main while things were apart. Used the jumper the starter method to crack the crank nut loose.

Also got the alternator/ps pump brackets from Georg so they went on. Nice stuff by the way and a great guy to deal with. Got the wrong saginaw pump so I ordered the right one today (64 chev nova).

Just went through your build beginning to end, looks awesome. I like the front suspension and cant wait to see it in action. You have done a TON of metal work on that tub. Have you thought about getting it chemical dipped or something in some sort of anti-rust stuff? Their is no way you could spray undercoating in all those nooks and crannies. After all that work I would look for a way to make it never rust. Whats this gonna be used for? Daily driver? Also have you thought about shortening the wheel well a little so you can move the seat farther back? I know you would have to modify the quarters again but your gonna be sitting their a lot hopefully. Unless it you break a lot of stuff lol.

Nah, havent decided what to do as far as paint and all that. Gonna hopefully be a jack of all trades jalopy when/if it gets done.

Threw together some rock slider lookin things yesterday. A couple gussets and whatnot and theyre ready to weld on.
