Hi all,
Brought a '78 55 home a couple of weeks ago. Found her in Hisperia, CA. Looks like she's been baking in the sun for quite a few years. Looks to be mostly original, all major components seem to be there, minimal rust, needs some love in the cosmetic department, starts, kind of.

Not sure yet how far I am going take this rig. Would like to keep as original as possible. Plan to get everything (well most things) working and get her drive-able and see where to take it from there. Currently working on collecting a few parts for the rear window, dash, all rubber seals, wheels/tires, etc.

I have been looking though this forum for a couple of weeks and have met a couple good people who have been very helpful. Hope to meet more. I will definitely need motivation!

I have attached a few pictures.

Thank you for taking a look!

Mike,

Looks like you got a good one to start. Sounds like a plan, get her running right and that will give you time to get to know it. By that time you'll know what you like and dislike.

Good Luck Man!

Looks great! I agree get it running and driving. It's fun and it will probably give you a list of things to do... But that is the fun of it right? Welcome, good to have another pig owner/restorer!

Yes, fun so far. Call it my therapy truck. When everything goes to heck, I go to work on her and forget about everything. Already have a big to do list, have a feeling the list will never end!

Couple more pictures. Currently working on the back window. Waiting on a gear and should be able to get it working.

She looks nice and straight!
'78 is a great year for 40s, last year before cat converters, 2F, disc brakes, and fine spline pinions (depending on build date).
You have the long-body birfs and you should have the ASCO factory lock-outs.
What is your build date?
Any PS or AC?

yes, pretty straight and in good shape. Excited to get her going. I have not check the build date yet, keep forgetting. I am pretty new to these trucks. What is the long-body birfs? ASCO lock-outs? Hub locks? Unfortunately, no power PS or AC. If i decide that I am in for the long-haul, both of those will be added. Thank you

From '76 (when they started putting disc brakes on the front of 40s and 55s sent to the US) to sometime in '78, the birfields were longer. Pigs got lock-outs (locking hubs) from the factory that were made by ASCO. 40s, for some reason, were sent to the US w/ drive plates that kept the front birfs locked. Dealers usually swapped in lock-outs from Warn, Selectro, other. In '79 the 40s started getting factory lock-outs from Aisin (spelling?), but they had a shorter body than the ASCO lock-outs b/c the birfs got shorter.
Make sense?
If you look at your front lock-outs, they probably say "ASCO" on the dial.
PS is not too bad, read up on the 60 series PS swap. Does your 2F have the holes in the block for mounting a PS pump?
AC is a little more involved...
