Intro post, take 2...
Had it shipped from the left coast a few weeks ago. Solid, solid rig. PO had a complete frame off resto done ( documented with pics). They did a pretty good job, but the paint is a bit thin in a few spots and some of the body work could have benefited from a few more hours of labor. Nothing a few annual trips to the local resto shop cant fix to make it a 9.5 / 10. I'd put it at about an 8.0 - 8.5/10 currently?
What it has:
Stock F.5 motor and 3 spd manual tranny
New weber carb - not sure if 32/36 or 38. PO was a stickler for originality so my guess is the former
New power stearing system
new headers and exhaust system
Willwood brakes up front with slotted and drilled rotors
Driving lights - Really bright
Brand new interior - headliner, carpets, seats, all gaskets...
vinyl wrapped dash
aftermarket stereo - el cheapo but it works for now
Running boards - wouldnt be my choice but they are installed well and are convenient
2" lift? hard to tell excatly how high above stock, but it looks taller for sure and clears the 33x12.5 wheels easily
$7k worth of miscellaneous maintenance and upgrade work performed over the last 2 years
What it needs:
.New key and lock for rear gate.
.Filter for carb
.Oil leak - looks to be leaking from either pan gasket and/or front main seal. I bought a new gasket but havent installed it yet. Existing gasket is fluid applied sealant. Re torqued the bolts to 9lbs and it has helped, but still looks to be leaking from the front.
.High oil pressure? - gauge reads consistently between 3/5 and 3/4 mark (when warm, on and off throttle respectively). Manual states H on gauge is 50psi, so that would put the reading at 40psi under load, and 30-35psi idling. Oil is fresh 10-40. Ordered a new sender. PCV and grommet just to eliminate possible contributors. It might be the cluster as well since the fuel reading rides between 1/2 and full on a full tank, even when idling on a flat surface. Maybe its a ground? Water temp takes FOREVER to register warm as well. Might be accurate?
.Doors dont lock, only unlock. Pumped graphite into the lock, but it honestly feels like the lock wasnt designed to turn counter clockwise from center. Worth noting that the door keys and locks are not original. i get around the issue by closing and locking the door through the rear and then locking the rear. The mechanism works smooth as butter otherwise.
.Passenger door lock inop - key does zero and i have to manually cycle the latch gear on occassion to get it to close correctly. My guess is a broken spring but havent pulled the panel to investigate.
.Dome light inop - either bulb or fuse
.Reverse lights inop - either bulb or fuse. Brake lights didnt work at first either but found the blown fuse and swapped it out. Was hoping that would fix the reverse lights as well but no such luck. hope its not the switch...
. Dash light inop
.Power brake vacuum leak- very mild but need to get it fixed asap. Audible hiss when depressing brake. truck stops reasonably well but doubt i could ever get it to lock up, even when standing on the pedal.
.Transfer case / tranny shim - Whines like mad above 45mph. All running gear fluids are good and tranny has new gears and clutch.
Thrilled to be an owner! Had to lose the FJ62 i picked up last november to make room for it though. Happy with the swap though. It really is a landmark design, IMHO.
