New headliner nightmare. Opinions needed.

If you are not doing a restoration, what are the downsides to removing the headliner and putting insulated sound deadner on the roof?

Downside is that you'd have to reinstall the headliner. Weight isn't a concern, especially since you have a roof rack.

I left out an important detail. Should have said delete the headliner, install insulation/sound deadner and leave it that way with no factory headliner.

Gotcha. No downsides if you put insulation up there!! It's been done before and it looks slick, but I can't find any pics right now.

Don't take it to a shop to do, especially if you got burned by the first one! We just installed our SOR headliner a few weeks ago...well I say we, but my husband did 90% of the work by himself. He has no mechanical or interior restoration experience, so if he can do it, anyone can. He said it was frustrating, but was able to do it and it looks perfect. You have nothing to lose by trying it yourself, especially since you have a back up. Get some of these Home Depot clips/clamps, a tube of contact cement and go for it.

Start at the pilars, line everything up, then work your way to the back and then to the front. Here is mine during the install and finished.

Does the FJ60 have cross ribs that support the roof sheet metal, if so how many?

Nice work Aloha Jen. Upholstery is just like everything else - you learn by doing - and just jumping in the pool.

EDIT: Should have said delete headliner and install Dynamat and do not reinstall headliner.

Dynamat and nothing covering it would look terrible. IMO. The roof body is not really something made to not be covered up.

I agree. I'm in the very early stages of this scheme.
