I have very limited room in the garage so bending tube was a problem. I decided to go cheapo hydro so that I could put the bender on a cart and push it around and get it out of the way when not in use. Should be able to bend up some coilover hoops now. :)

I've been so unmotivated lately its not even funny... between the holidays and everything else I've done nothing. 88chevota's "fj62 Bob it" thread in the hardcore section on Mud at least got me into the garage to put on some blue tape on my rig and figuring out some new lines. At first I was thinking about setting up the rear to match my front for ride height but upon further thinking it makes more sense to me set up the rear first because there is less adjustment there. Anyway, I wish there was more to update but....

I think that'll put me in the wheelbase of about 122ish.

so to prove to myself that cutting the body that far back was a good idea, I bolted up the axle to the wheels and looked. This is at ride height... I refuse to go any higher (25" to frame rail with the 42's). Leaving it there will only give me 2" of bump MAX.

So then I crawled under there and found two more obvious hang ups...

1. The gas tank. Its hard to see in the pic but the top of the pumpkin is too close for my comfort and the axle isnt even all the way back yet. One launch off the sand dune and it'll munch it. hmmmm.

2. Springs are going have to be pretty flat. I'm moving the spring perches but I think I'll have to "french" in the front mount and sleeve the rear side which also means boxing in the frame rail back there.

I better start tracking down a fuel cell. :)

I'm running about 2 1/4 inches of bump at ride heigth. I tap them when I go over speed bumps. It's not really an issue crawling around but if you are jumping the dunes you're going to need some pretty strong bumps cause you'll probably be pounding on them. I brought mine down because there are parts of the spring that will contact the frame to get much more uptravel besides the necessary fender trimming (not an issue for you). You may not want to get those springs as close as possible to the frame due to clearance but there is always a way around that. This will be part of the compromise to run a full bodied rig. If Dora was on all fours I'd drive over and show you what I mean; could at least give you an idea of clearances when running a low lift on chevy 63s.

yeah... 63s are the plan (picking them up tomorrow). I'd like to see 3-4 inches of bump in the back. I really wish I had the money to just to link the back now too. Too bad your not closer I really could use another set of fresh eyes at this point.

I was thinking about the work we did today with the rear leafs and I think you should just leave the fixed ends tacked to the frame until after you get the backside boxed and the hole drilled/sleeved for the bushings. That hole won't be movable and it's in a great spot so in case you need to adjust the shackle angle I'd leave the fixed end tacked until you've got the springs hung to make sure that's where you want them. Just put on a couple more tacks for strength during rear axle mock up. I'm pretty sure they are in a good spot but tacks will be easier to break incase you decide to move it. Fun, when can we do it again?

yep yep.... I agree. Thanks again for the help yesterday Mike. Hopefully we can get together again soon... maybe I'll actually finish in time for Rubicon that way!

You must be planning on making it through the Rubiton FAST! I don't think your sheetmetal is going to last with strength like that under your right foot.

How comes the boxing of the rear channels? I'm thinking of taking next saturday off and it'd be fun to do something I enjoy (my work is not my favorite place), I bet we could get the rear on the ground in a day.

I've managed to cut the flat stock to the correct length and cut some stock for in between the frame rails when I remove the the tire carrier/rear cross member. I dont have a lot of time this weekend but I hope to get the rear stock tacked up there and remove the tire carrier. Might even get the rails ground down to start boxing.

I'll talk to the wife about next Sat. I think if we didnt have so much chaos going on like last time a lot more progress could be made.

Sounds like a go on Sat. if you have nothing better going on.

Dang, you post up quick! Seems like I just got home. Before you know it you'll have that rig on the ground. Look forward to bending some tube.

I'm good for helping out on the rear, I won't be much help on the front so while I have something of value to add I'll keep on bugging you. So hopefully another run at it the 14th or/and the 28th.
