My 73 grill that I'm close to putting back on my project needs refurbishing/repainting. What have some of you guys done to yours? Mine has a little surface rust but is solid.

Thanks

I went the cheap route and hand sanded, primed and painted with silver Hammertone. I also did my headlight rings. Plan on shooting clear coat (Killer Cans) www.alsacorp.com

Lou,

I like the looks of the paint you used. Did you order it from that site? Does it come in a can or do you spray it from a gun? Also, is hammertone the color or does it have a paint code?

Thanks

The finish is called Hammered not Hammertone, my mistake, and comes in Black, Brown, Silver and is good old Rust-oleum from Home Depot. The Killer Cans I ordered was the clear coat, thought I'd try it and see what its all about. Reading the site information they have a clear coat that is a matte finish so the paint below has a primer finish, I got the normal clear coat called Speed Clear.

Got me a can of hammered silver/gray yesterday and maybe I'll get to the grill this weekend. Do either of you guys have a picture of your grill with that paint mounted up? Has anybody tried to paint the TOYOTA letters black and then tape them up to then paint the silver?
Thanks

I did a quick restore on my grill a while back.Wasn't too rusty so just sanded it by hand, primed it,then rattle canned it.Not the hammered finish but looks that was from years of road grit hitting it.
I painted the black first then taped across all the lettering and used an exacto knife to trim out each one.Took a while but I'm pretty happy with it.Then I put on a couple of coats of clear to help it stay this way.I did the side covers/vents the same way.I don't recall the paint types/codes but it was nothing special order - just local hardware store stuff.
I can't find many pics right now but here's a before and after shot for ya.
BTW I painted the headlight rings silver as well and reinstalled them properly.:D

Really cleans it up.

I used a rattle can paint. It's real close to the original silver/ bronze used. I'll look at the can when I get home.

Not trying to hijack here as I have a grill to restore as well. But my grill has cut outs around each letter of Toyota...is that older, newer or some odd aberration? I sort of like the looks of the repairs above.

Eric,

I found a grill like that recently too.Posted it up here to see what it's from.Seems that they were on '78 and newer 55's.I like the look myself.

Edit:That's a custom warp over the O.

Hijack over.

My grill is chrome. Is that unusual?

hijack off...

I have had very good luck with the Rustoleum hammertone finish. I painted my grill (barbeque grill that is...) frame with it and it held up very well...longer than the rest of it. And it was out in the elements all the time, uncovered. So I would think that it would hold up well on the pig.

Lou,

I wonder how the hammered silver with a hammered black background would look? I may try that out. All of these look real good. It makes the decision tough!

Like to see someone post those paint makes and names?
