Now that spring is here and the snow is gone its time to start some TLC on my TLC '70 FJ55. She's pretty. Origional F engine that runs great. 4speed trans. SOA. And PO began some interior work. Upon closer inspection there are actually quite a few spots where rust is starting to bubble under the paint. Kind of a waste of a pretty paint job. Anyway I am going to go in and remove all of the rust this time and repaint her. I can't decide if I want to stay stock as PO had intended or take a more modern approach like the stuff that Icon 4x4 is putting out (matte finish paint and Rhino liner type trim). Now is your chance to help me decide.

Sometimes I think bedliner is like a Tatoo... the fad will wear off and someday you'll wake up and go WTF.

Now don't get me wrong, I have liner in my 40 and I like it. I'm not sure I'd like it on the exterior. I do like the Matte finish colors though.

Not sure what I'll do on my 55 project. I like the idea of something non-conventional.

Nice 55!

If that's your biggest worry, you're miles ahead of *most of us. For me, having the mechanicals in top order is #1 on the list. After that, take small steps in the rust repairs as to not have your rig under a tarp & keep it driveable. I've seen many projects get started & not..... well Imonna stop right there :hillbilly:

Yeah I really don't have it that bad I know but I have always wanted an FJ55 and have always dreamed of what I would do and now this opportunity fell into my lap. I sold off my 08 Tundra and bought it. It is to be my daily driver and so I do need to do a few things such as:
-new front bucket seats and shoulder belts to replace lap belt equipped bench.
-power steering
-Air condish would be a sweet addition

Other than that its just dream stuff. But fun dream stuff none the less. I figured since I needed to repaint the rust areas I might as well repaint the whole thing how I would like it (I wouldn't have picked the white/light gray two tone myself).

Possibly looking at a new engine/ overhaul of the F that is in there. As I stated at the start of the thread it runs well but doesnt get me anywhere in a hurry.

Matte finish two-tone Rhinoliner that follows the original lines...white & Fudsicle orange.

Probably right, it's been a while since I've had either.
But, the orange/white is the best Pig color ever.

Air condish? In an old cruiser in missoula Montana? Are you serious?

Are you talking interior or exterior:confused:

On my piggy, I am going to clean the whole interior and then do the following:

  • primer
  • Sound/heat deadening foil (Dynamat type "foil")
  • Sound/heat deadening paint (Second Skin Sludge "paint")
  • Non-rubber style bed liner
The above is for the whole interior about 6" up from the floor. I'll probably do all that but the bed liner under the headliner.

BUT, in the front, I'm going to add carpet to it.

OTOH, my rig is going to be a daily driven offroader:D

My intention as well. I want a quieter ride but still like the idea of hosing off the inside when its dirty.

U sure it's SOA? Doesn't look that way to me. The paint looks pretty good. I'd just get some matching paint and treat the rust areas. Otherwise, blue/white or orange/white gets my vote. An engine swap could get you the AC and PS, though I'd skip the AC. If you're looking at an engine swap consider the 3fe over a carbed F, though I'd go with the 3B or 2H- maybe with a "frybrid" addition.
