I don't know what you all are smoking but the Group 31m would not install correctly in a LX I am building.

Too big for the hold down

My battery fits in the stock tray, but...

I had to bend the ends of the j-hooks to fit the cross bar, and I had to place a piece of wood under the battery to bring it up to the same height as stock.

I also said above to make sure the terminals are on the correct side.

NLX, You missed my point:
Just because Odyssey makes the DHP, doesn't mean that the DHP is available in all of the configurations and sizes that the Odyssey is.

If I had to do it over, I would get a dual battery setup with 2 group 24F DHP, which is the stock size.

Sears bought the company and rebranded the battery for their Sears brand.

No. Enersys owns Odessey. Enersys signed a multi year deal with Sears to manufacture Platinum batteries for them starting in March of 07.

BTW, I also have a PC1700MJT. It kicks.

Wow! It amazes me everytime the question of what battery to pick comes up in the 80's section. Choose your battery by how you use your truck. I had a 60 for 2 1/2 years with a winch on it and I had a yellow top and it never left me stranded and worked great. Used it lots of times with the winch. I have a red top in my 80, just because the battery it had in it when I got it was basicly dead. If you get a yellow top make sure you have a lot accessories like WXM stated. It is made to have strong pulls out of it and be used a lot. Its like getting a drag racer car just to go get your groceries once a week. If you just need a battery to start your truck every day, then go to autozone and get one with lifetime warranty.

So the sears 31 platinum marine will fit in my 97 and holds enough charge to winch off of with the truck not running??

Here are some of the pictures from my new Odyssey Battery!

This will sound funny, but go and by the everstart maxx at walmart. Economical, and comes with a three year free replacement followed by prorating. Plus if you bring it back within the three year replacement period you get a brand new warranty. Sometimes they don't even test them, they just give you a new one. Look the battery up in the fitment book, and go with the larger optional battery, they fit fine. I run a single setup in my '94 80, and my '95 80, both with stock electronics, the '95 will sometimes go a month without being started during plow season, starts right up no matter how cold. I run two in my diesel, never had a problem. Lastly, the abused ones, I run four in my '76 F250 Highboy mud truck. I run two in the front, and two in the rear. The truck has a 15,000lb. warn in front, and a 12,000lb. warn in the rear, and twin high output fans for the rear radiator. I had to replace one of the batteries on the mud truck, defect, otherwise no problems. Hope this helps.

Running a winch is almost all battery. Stock alts put out a max of 80-90 amps. A loaded down M12K can draw 300+.

The post from AuburnFJsexy is spot on with regards to the intended use. I didn't want a dual batt set up both for the hassle of relocating things under the hood of my 91 and simplicity. I wanted the largest single CCA and reserve I could stuff under the bonnet. The Odessey PC1700MJT was the ticket.

In the past I had always used DieHard Golds, but I was going through them every 3 or 4 years. While Sears does (or did) offer replacements, it was more of a hassle than it was worth. I'm coming up on the 2nd year of use on this battery so only time will tell.

Thanks guys I think I am going to get the spm in the 31 series.

Same as Landtank, I put in Sears Platinum (Group 35). I did try the bigger one (31 IIRC), but the terminals are on the wrong side (for LX450). BTW the Platinum has one extra year of warranty comparing to the Sears Gold.

I don't know what you all are smoking but the Group 31m would not install correctly in a LX I am building. Too big for the hold down. Too big to fit properly in the tray. the terminals were on the wrong side.

Made my own hold down from OSH and longer j bolts from an auto supply store.

The tray needs a bit of trimming for the battery to fit.

A Group 31 Sears Platinum (Odyssey) in my 80:

The j bolt near the fender must be trimmed and you can't use a wing nut.

So I read that the 31 fits, but when I search on Sears' website, it says the 35 is the correct replacement. Which is it?

A group 31 is bigger than a group 35. Either will fit, but the group 31 just barely.

It's like saying a 31" tire is the correct replacement, but a 35" tire fits. :meh:

After my Optima died in about two years, I went with the Sears Platinum P-2, Group 65. The posts are opposite but I was running new cables so it didn't matter.

I chose the 65 over the 31 primarily for the warranty. The 65 is a 4 year free replacement and 100 month pro rated. The 31 is 3 year free replacement.

The 31 will easily fit in the tray by trimming a couple of the fins on the back of the battery and modding the hold down. If you search, you'll find a thread that gives fitting instructions for the 31 and another thread for the 65.

FWIW I run a DEKA Intimidator 78DT. These are very good batteries for the money. I think they are about $150. Great fit in my lexus and it has dual terminals. They are AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries like optima, odyssey, sears platinum, etc. It is a dual purpose battery, starting and deep cycle. I've used this battery for about 5 years now. I used it in my Mercedes Diesel for a couple years. I could get starts in 15 to 20 below F days. I drained it down many times, which will kill batteries pretty quickly. Mine still has about 90 percent capacity. Many of the AGM batteries like a 2A or less trickle charge over night, every once in awhile. Sometimes you can revive the optimas doing this.

I decided on a Group 65 Platinum for the starter battery and will be using the Group 31 Marine for my second/accessories battery.
But the Group 65 is shorter so I had to put a piece of 2x10 lumber under it and I will have to have a new hold down bracket fabbed up but right now I have it in backwards so it won't short out. I love the power of it and can't wait to get the second Marine battery in.

THX M8! :grinpimp:

DONT confuse Die Hard with the Die Hard Platinum. The platinum IS an Odyssey. The Gold series may very well be the same Kirkland battery, I dont know.

Both the golds and the Kirkland are NOT AGM batteries as the Platinum/Odyssey are.

Got a Deka Group 31 at my local mom and pop battery store for $110 out the door. Could not be happier!
