So I am still struggling with a few distributor questions. I have been doing my research and am at info overload. The most helpful thing I found was in the tech links where JimC and Zepp were discussing Distributors thru the years.

Jim wrote:

All E-87 have mechanical advance. Curves vary from year to year.

E-'68: Xtra small distributor, vacuum advance (correctly called "non-smog", also sold as "non-USA").

69-74: XS distributor, but w/ vac retard.

75 & early 76: small distributor, completely redesigned, very good quality points distributor. Vacuum retard.

Late '76 &77: Same, but w/ vac advance

'78: redesigned w/ Med. size screwdown, waterproof cap, electronic ignition. Vacuum advance & retard.

'79-80: dual diaphragm advance. One big advance stage for normal operation, small second stage for extra advance at hi-altitude

81-87distributor body redesigned to use large cap. Same dual diapragm advance introduced in '79.

88-92 distributor redesigned w/ out advance. Distributor pickup is a crank angle sensor, advance curve is controlled by computer.
That's all I know (or all I'm admitting to) for now.

And at the bottom of the page, this pic was posted:

So I figure the reading is basicaly right to left on the photo - the early dizzy on the right, 69-74 with vac retard (The vacuum module is on the opposite side from the rest), then things get confusing for me. The next two have Vac advance, the last one looks like it has no vacuum module (88-92 maybe?) and then there is the electronic dizzy at the top (I am guessing '78) and finally something with a two stage vacuum on the top right.

So, with this limited knowledge, I checked what I have. I have two worn out F motors on the shop floor with the same dizzy and a 2F I have just put in the truck. I pulled the distributors and clicked this pic:

The one on the left appears to be a vacuum advance from late '76 & 77 (the motor after all was 11/77 but that means nothing) and has a label on it that I can make out "2F" on the bottom. The other one appears to be someplace between 69 and 76 , extra small with vacuum retard.

My plan was to throw a Pertronix in and a Flamethrower because I did not want to buy another dizzy and I like no points = no screwing around with dwell. Plus the one on the right worked fine in the worn out F motor before I took it out but the one on the left is specifically for a 2F. (both are Teq dizzies BTW). I noticed that the 2F dizzy had no condensor or ignitor connected to it. (Probably stolen over the years.)

Finally, I am running a weber and have already painted and replaced my side cover so I would prefer not to do that again or dimple it to accept a 60 dizzy (although I understand this is a favorite too)

So name the dizzies. There are 7 and a half up there. I am most interested in figuring out the true vintage of the ones I have of course.

Then of the two, if I was to throw in a pertronix, which would be best to do that in, Vac advance or vac retard. Or am I the retard and should drop some change on something else and post these in the for sale section.

After some more cleaning (and a magnifying glass) I was able to make out the following numbers on the "2F":

19100-61020
029100 3 1
2F P15

The following numbers were on the "F"
19100-60063
029 100-1870

Obviously the first numbers are the part numbers, but what do the others indicate?

They both appear to be retard
Do you think so? The Vacuum module are mounted on the opposite sides. I always thought that determined vacuum advance or retard?

the F one shows 69/03-71/09

2F one shows years 75/01-76/08
Awsome - that is helpful.

Yes.

The secret is in which way the points plate moves when vacuum is applied and both of them appear to retard it.
Well, the question then is I have NEVER dealt with a retard dizzy and always advance.

Since I am running a weber, do you think either one of these is appropriate and what would be the best way to make it function efficiently? (Where to connect the vacuum or not at all, etc)

As I said, the early model was originally on the F with the same Weber but I never drove it enough to see its issues as the engine was thrashed when I got it.

Either one will do fine no matter what kind of carb you have as long as you don't rev it over 6,500 RPM. Make sure that the centrifugal advance works and that the bushings are not worn out. Don't hook up the vacuum retard as you don't need it.

Sound advice. I think a pertronix is made for both so I think I will go with that along with the Flamethrower coil. Now it is my understanding that with that set up, no condensor is needed. Dizzy with pertronix wired to the coil and that is it. Am I correct?

(And I hope to not go over 6,500 - the 2F I put in is rebuilt but I am pretty sure it would end up as the F I took out if I did that:eek:)

I personally wouldn't run a retard dizzy unless there was no other choice. If you HAVE to run one of those two for now, I would recommend running the 60063, not because it's a better unit [it's NOT] but because the Pertronix you fit for it now will swap easier into a vacuum advance unit later on when you get around to it.

I just happen to have both in stock if you need them.:grinpimp:

Best

Yes.

Pertronix is a popular option. Just don't leave the ignition key on.
I have read that but I thought the second generation (Pertronix II) Fixed that issue.

I'm trying to figure out which dizzy I have. Truck is a '72, original F motor but has lots of various parts on it.
Running a small Holley 2 Barrel and I'm trying to figure out if I need the vacuum advance (or retard) hooked up.

These are the best pictures I have right now lol will take some at a better angle when I get home.
It's been on my mind deciding if i should get pertronix or fork up for an HEI

(This was from when my points lobe exploded:0)

If it helps, I currently have the vacuum port hooked up to ported vacuum on my carb, and it seems to work as it should?

That is, advancing the timing under part throttle

That is what I’ve seen referred to as “early-68” or extra small “non-USA”. It has the octane adjuster and is a vac advance dizzy. If you apply suction to the diaphragm the points plate should rotate counter clockwise.

I installed Pertronix in a dizzy just like that. Works really good in my F engine. I run an Aisan that has a ported base specifically for an advance vac signal.
