My wife: A brand new 4Runner Limited or a 3 year old 200?

Wonder if the majority of the forum crowd votes for the LC, would you go for it?
I am married and I know that if she picks something for herself and you make her into buying something that's not entirely what she wants the consequences may be catastrophic sometimes haha

The problem is that I got her a RRS to begin with. You can’t help but love the thing. It’s a sports car SUV. And a RRS is like the little girl with the curl: When’s she’s good she’s really good, but when she’s bad, she’s awful.

But we can’t stomach $40K depreciation, even though the Land Cruiser drops in massive chunks those first three years, too.

We’ve done the Mercedes GL deal. Total junk. BMW slightly better, RRS about like BMW but runs circles around it in many ways. The front ends of the LX and GX are simply hideous to my personal taste. She doesn’t like the RX because she says it’s more of a car. Same for Highlander. That leaves 4Runner and LC.

The Infiniti QX80 is a possibility I suppose but I have no experience with them.

I’m guessing she will go with a new limited 4Runner in red with the nightside black rims.

The QX80 is a fine car. Very good fit and finish and plenty of luxury details. Not RR level and maybe not quite LC reliability, but is built on a proven platform. I’d definitely at least get her to look at it.

It also screams status symbol so there’s that....

I suppose I could take a RRS and swap out all of the electronics and running gear with a 4Runner. Then trade off the poor 4Runner to some unsuspecting soul. :bounce:

What would you guys do? BTW, I have a 2010 Amazon Green 200 with 120K on it and still love it. I wasn't super thrilled that I had to put a new radiator in it last month, but i guess that's to be expected.

Any thoughts?

I'd get rid of the wife and get the Land Cruiser! :p j/k

Fat Amy was on my list last year. I personally didn't like color combination but 37" wheels was always a wish. 33" feels a bit small for a Bruiser.

Plus Infiniti is on fire sale. I think the QX80 is far to big and barge-like - but it does look more expensive than it is.

We are 4 pages in now...
At this point...
-Hand wife checkbook and point her to this thread.

If she (or you) STILL can’t decide?
Send your check to me and I’ll demonstrate. :hillbilly:

my thoughts:

If you put her in a 200...she'll be " what was the other thing you wanted me to drive" OR she'll be " that other thing just didn't feel right, (kinda budget) after driving that 200" Nothing against t4r's, great platform, different level, but in this case...Now skip the LC and move her to an LX ( despite you/her not liking the front, show her pics of LX that are modd'ed, but moreso, get her "inside" of it ) they look awesome, inside is superior to LC and they are easier to locate and less beat, it'll be a done deal. The LX ftw.

this is one of my fav LX pics...

So I'm reading this thread, thinking "you guys should try a Mercedes GLS" . . .

We’ve done the Mercedes GL deal. Total junk.

Oh . . . but - we've had 3 and they're - um - actually - dang yes they are junk. Kind of.

2010 GL350 CPO (diesel version, our best of the 3, maybe) probably had $15k mechanicals/electrics work done under warranty. It got hit 2x - 2nd totalled it - cosmetics - the 5 kids (not all mine, thank the Lord) in the car thought it was hilarious. No one even got tussled. Extremely safe.

Got a 2016 GL 350. Lemon. Left me stranded with a hard to track down no-start problem several times, parking sensors kept dying.

Rather than lemon law it we got trade assistance into my current 2017 GLS550. Arguably the best of the 3. No major issues <knock on wood>. Fantastic ride, very sporty, would give the RRS a huge run for the money, and so far reliable.

All that being said - we just bought a family members 2008 LC. Very different ride from the GLS. I like the ride but it feels like a truck compared to the 550. Totally OK with that.

Why not look at a GLS 550 CPO? Extend the warranty to 7 years/120k or whatever. New model is out late this year and you could get one couple years old at like half retail as the depreciation curve is nauseating level steep.

My wife wants a GLS 450 and I know their reliability sucks but she's all about status (ugh). Anyways, I'm going to convince her to lease it that way when she hates it and the issues pop up, she can turn it in. Plus, she works from home so the mileage will be good.

You know guys I never recommended a GL 550 I recommended a G 550
Not sure if important to the OP, but if they ever want to carry anyone over 5'5" in the second row it might be tough. Great trucks, but dicey reliability, and potentially exorbitant out of warantee repair cost

I bet, despite the tri star, the OPs wife will think it looks like box on wheels.

I only recommended the G5 50 because it is one of the highest status symbol SUVs and that’s what she seems to care about if she cared about the engineering Bill quality etc. etc. should be driving an Alex 570 R Land Cruiser the original poster and understands this he just want somebody to talk to doing something that might work with his wife I think he’s doomed

Heh...

Imagine trying to find parts in a nearby town when it breaks down in the trail... :-0

Looks like she wants a new 4Runner Limited with all the bells. I'm good with that. There's a lot to be said for worry free driving. She won't take the RRS out of town now because she is scared it will strand her. That's an $80K vehicle. Something is wrong with that picture.

I got a ride in that years ago.... owned by Arnold Palmer's friend .. had it in his warehouse / hunting museum out by Ontario Airport Cali .. owned by Carl Ross. He had the trade name for the Safari gear.

The one thing I love about either choice is they will run forever and neither one of them will have you lose a bunch of money if you needed to sell it. My wife and I were in the same situation and went with the LC but I was okay with either knowing it would be better than the Audi Q7 we had (3,000 mile lemon law buyback)
