My wife: A brand new 4Runner Limited or a 3 year old 200?

So we are completing our lease on a 2015 Range Rover Sport. I loved and hated that thing, but I don't like the taste of paying $1100 a month and having "no car" after 39 months. It has had a few issues. The fact that we are 250 miles from a Land Rover dealership makes it an even more dicey proposition.

So, it's probably back to Toyota. She doesn't like the GX front end and thinks it's overstyled. Same for the LX. We tested a 2016 Cruiser today that was pretty nice, with 51K miles, for about $58K ask. She was so-so on it. I would love to, after this Cruiser, to just trade her into a new Cruiser every 36 months.

She really liked a loaded out new 4Runner and we can get that for $44-45 out the door. It's more sporty. We could trade it in every couple of years for a brand new one for about $10K every time.

My dilemma is that she's used to all of the panache of a high end European car, but she knows full well they aren't made well.

What would you guys do? BTW, I have a 2010 Amazon Green 200 with 120K on it and still love it. I wasn't super thrilled that I had to put a new radiator in it last month, but i guess that's to be expected.

Any thoughts?

For 19 years, my wife drove a Suburban/YukonXL. Kids aren't little anymore, and she wanted something less battleship-like.

I tried to get her into a used 200 Series, but she wanted new, so we got a 2019 4Runner Limited. Shortly after, I got a great deal on a 2008 LX 570, so I bought it, too.

She loves her 4Runner - likes that it's small, zippy (relatively), and maneuverable. She doesn't worry about hitting anything in parking lots.

She also loves the LX - the ride is just vastly superior. Even in the Limited iteration, the 4Runner rides like a Jeep. Also, the tech and amenities in the 4Runner are seriously dated - barely ahead of the 2008 LX, and the 200 series tech has been updated a couple of times since 2008.

All to say, you can't go wrong, but if a soft ride and/or up-to-date tech are really important, make those points to her before buying.

My Dad recently got a 2019 4Runner Limited 4WD and he likes it. Having driven his 4Runner and my 2016 200, the 200 wins by a long shot. I honestly can't tell a difference in the ride quality (both are very good), but the interior specs on the LC are far superior. The 4Runner interior looks a little outdated, and I honestly do not understand why they made the Entertainment Screen on the new 4Runners so small. My 200 has blindspot monitoring and the 4Runner does not. I think they are both great cars btw. I had been driving an 06 4Runner for the past 7 years so both of these are considered a MASSIVE step up

the 4runner has no soul....... a 200 or any Land cruiser just has charm and character to it

Drove both back to back. Went through exact same thing with my wife when shopping for a new vehicle to replace my tundra. She wanted the 4runner because of the "well I can get a TRD Pro for the price of a used Land Cruiser!" Well, I bought the LC and was having some work done on my commuter vehicle so she drove the LC for a week. I never got it back. Now she calls it her car, drives it everywhere, wants PINK maxtraxx for it and even tows our turtleback. While I would like to have it back some day, having a wife into the land cruiser as much as I am has been a huge benefit to our adventures and build.

The problem is that I got her a RRS to begin with. You can’t help but love the thing. It’s a sports car SUV. And a RRS is like the little girl with the curl: When’s she’s good she’s really good, but when she’s bad, she’s awful.

But we can’t stomach $40K depreciation, even though the Land Cruiser drops in massive chunks those first three years, too.

We’ve done the Mercedes GL deal. Total junk. BMW slightly better, RRS about like BMW but runs circles around it in many ways. The front ends of the LX and GX are simply hideous to my personal taste. She doesn’t like the RX because she says it’s more of a car. Same for Highlander. That leaves 4Runner and LC.

The Infiniti QX80 is a possibility I suppose but I have no experience with them.

I’m guessing she will go with a new limited 4Runner in red with the nightside black rims.

if you dont like depreciation why buy a brand new car? Nothing wrong with a slightly used car......

you do you know this isn’t a vehicle question your wife could give a s*** about the vehicle what she cares about is the status symbol and you care about the build quality sounds like you haven’t yet considered the new G 550 Mercedes you get everything that she wants “status” they don’t seem to depreciate as much as the others my daughter has a Range Rover sport with the big V8 again only because of the status.

We had a GL once and it made the RRS seem like a Camry in terms of reliability.

Thread of why I'm never getting married.

I can hardly even choose things for myself, let alone for someone else and then taking flack for choosing the wrong one.

Sounds like you should get her a Volvo XC90, or a Cayenne.

The XC-90 has horrid reliability. The Cayenne is better, but very expensive and, IMO, ugly styling.

All of the options mentioned are worse than the 200 as far as reliability.
