Those discs Marshall posted up are the s***...I used many..many of them to strip off paint in all the tight places (around the rear window, body edges on the quaters and doors, around the cowl, pillars...list goes on and on) on mine. Perfect for the rain gutter. And yes the gutter is filled with something akin to 3M seam sealer.
 
Also, as it appears you will eventually get to the bone, so to speak, on your truck two places you should definitely use those discs, and even then with care, are circled in the pics. These two spots are where the factory used lead in the seams. Also you'll need one of these to put them on...http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Category.taf?CategoryID=323&pricetype= but they will save alot of time, flesh and knuckle busting.

I found the lead on the front already. It's pretty soft and I noticed the change in the material pretty fast. Why is it a big deal to find the lead? Or to take the top off of it for that matter (which of course, I did)?

Right now I have pnumatic tools, but no air...but the more I go forward with this, the more I am thinking I might need to make an investment in a good compressor.

Go get a "nut splitter" from sears. baciscally it splits the nut in half with a sharp wedge, and then the nut should come off more easily. they are in the tool section, and it was about $20 last time I got one...

No big deal to find lead or taking a little bit off the top. You'll just need to float that back out with a little filler. I just always try to minimize the amout of factory lead work that I grind out. Less bondo is always better, and if you know where the lead is ahead of time you can back off it a bit. Another thing you can do for the nasty nut on the turn signal base is use your dremel to cut the nut off. One pass down either side and a whack or two with a chisel should take care of it.
 
What kind of roof rack is this?

This came with the 55...anyone know what kind of roof rack this is and if there are still accessories available? I'd love to put the spare and a gas can up there and lock them down.

I have all the hardware to mount the rack on the truck, BTW.

Is that an Alluminium or Steel rack?
 
looks just like the "wilderness" rack I linked above, I have one on my 60 from the PO. Not a bad rack for a foundation, I welded some cross braces to mine and a few other modifications.
 
Yeah, it's going to need some modifications if I am going to use it at all. There are only 2 cross pieces now, so a couple more will be helpful. Or maybe a mesh floor...hmmmmm....
 
So how are things coming along? No update in a while.

Have you checked to see if your fenders are tack welded together? I pulled my driver's side fender the other night and thought they had also stuck together, only to find the telltale dimples of tack welds in a couple of spots.

I dunno why Toyota welded them together if they're supposed to be able to be removed independently... maybe for easier positioning during assembly?

My pig is coming along slowly too... still tackling the rust, but things look a little better every day. :)
 
Thanks for checking in. I haven't done much because I have been out of town for work. When I get home on the weekends, there's so much to do to catch up around the house, it's hard to get to work on the pig. I am laundry girl in the house and have a lot of the homey stuff too. Oh, and then there's the spending time with the boyfriend :).

I plan to get out there soon now that the pollen attack is over here in Atlanta. Everything is covered in yellow pollen...including the pig!

How are the rockers coming? I just ended cutting one of mine at the top and bottom angles yesterday. I bought the IPOR rockers, took some 1/2 inch tubing to create a frame to weld to and used POR15 on everything. I still have some rust to finish up on the back side of the old rockers, patch panels to make and then I'll weld it all back together.

So that is the plan... I have two weekend in one rocker....

On another note. I had that type rack on top of my 55 and it began to rust where the mounts came in contact with the roof gutter due to blockage of snow and water draining. Becareful if you decide to use it.

Um, hate to say it, but under no circumstances is he EVER allowed to touch a power tool (outside of the lawn mower) again. He grew up with a dad that paid someone to do everything around the house. When I gave him a chainsaw and taught him how to use it, he did fine until he handed it to me balde first and hit the trigger. Luckily I am pretty quick and didn't sustain any injuries. But that's when the no power tools rule went into effect!

While I joke about that, if he really wanted to help, I'd let him. :)

I am done uncovering all the cancer, but trying to decide if I want to do the IPOR rockers or not. I am leaning towards yes. That being said, I sure would be better off if I'd just bite the bullet and buy a welder and learn how to use it.

Thanks for the tip on the roof rack, I'll keep an eye out for that!
 
I am going to put some type of light roof rack on my Piggie when I get the roof fixed. I had thought about the rust but a few nice applications of POR15 will hopefully do the trick.

I'm still working on uncovering the rust on my Piggie. I think I've just about uncovered everything that I can see from the interior...keeping my fingers crossed.

Is it about time for some pics of your progress???:bounce:
