I posted this over on pirate the other day and thought I should share it over here too.
So I guess I joined the fj club today. I picked up 2 1972 fj40s. One is pretty solid but with an unknown motor and the other one has been rear ended but has a good motor and lots of usable parts.

Looks great. If you arnt going to use the bench seats let me know.

I Finished unloading everything this morning. I took a quick inventory of everything. I found her old license plate I'm guessing the last time she was on the road was 1995. I realized I'm missing the right barn door. I guess that's what you call it. . Other than that I've pretty much got at least one of every thing if not two. I found a nice assortment of shotgun shells and rifle cartridges in the glove box. I'm guessing one of the POs used it as like a hunting buggy. I would also explain the gun racks in the back. I started looking through the engine compartment and checked the oil filter and discovered some nice milky oil. Yuk. Well I discovered the valve cover wasn't bolted on so I guess water could have gotten in through there maybe. I took the valve cover off and found several leaves in there. It wasn't exactly what I was hopin to find. I then checked the spark plugs and thankfully there wasn't any corrosion on them.

I believe I've got two sets but interior is a little ways off for now if don't don't use them I'll let you know.

The plan is to keep it relatively stock with some updates and upgrades. The red one has an ac system I'm going to try and salvage refit to the green one. I will for sure go with disk breaks up front and maybe in the rear. Other than that I haven't really decided yet.

Awesome. The split bench seat is unique to the 71 and 72 models. Are you going to build a stockish or "pirate" 40?

Huh? I've had split bench seats on my 67, 69, 71, and 72. Please elaborate.

I knew it was a bad sign when I started opening the oil plug and water started coming out

Made a little progress this afternoon. After seeing how much water was in the oil I've decided it is more than I can fix. I will just swap the motor out of the red one in once I finish pulling the body. I ran in to some striped bolts on the left fender. I've been shearing a lot of bolts too more than I would expect. At this point I don't really care as long as they come out.

Current state.

I broke out the grinder and the sawzal to take care of those stripped bolts. I've got a few questions also? What is this box looking thing it was on the passenger side firewall. Also is there and purpose for this hole in the side of the top? There's one on the other side but it has a bolt or something through it.

That box looking thing is the fan for your heat.
Oh ok just I thought it would have had some hoses or something if it was a part of the heater.

I picked up a few goodies from harbor freight at lunch. I got a little bit more done today. I finished taking the break boosted master cylinder and all that good stuff off. I was going to take the steering column off but I couldn't figure out how it can off so I moved on to the hood and hard top. The hood came off pretty easily and so did the fiber glass top. It looks like I'm going to have to replace the gutters on the top and do a little bit of fifer glass repair. I started to work on the body mounts but had absolutely no luck with them. I probably just cut the bolts off tomorrow.

The hole is probably from a previous owner putting a CB antenna. It's a very common hole people have on here from people that previously owned them. I had one the guy that did my body work patched it up.
I doesn't really look like that since its on both sides. Here a pic off the other side
