Eli - I see you found a Hi-Lift....good job. Is it bolted down to the storage box or just sitting there? If it isn't secured, you may want to.....you don't want that heavy piece of metal coming at the back of your heads in an accident/roll over, etc......
In the video Ashley mentioned attaching it to the rear tire carrier.

Aha.....the computer I was on didn't have speakers (don't ask)....good to know.

Eli - Checked out the blog.....looks great! Hope you get some better mileage as you go, though.....that'll put a big wrench in the budget if it doesn't.

rain ex and call it good......... :-)

bottle of the stuff is sitting in the glove box

thats the ONLY way.

oh and by the way.. i tried making a road trip once without wipers.. it didn't go so well when it started to downpour.. noticed you didn't have wipers on a couple of pics went make sure you get those hooked up!

I have the wipers, and the motor is all wired up...but upon completion I learned it was a bum motor wah wah

If u get close to MN I got a great place on the lake to camp. And it would be fun to hang out.

That would be sweet, although with the recent MPG discovery we are now cutting out portions of the trip so MN will have to be another trip - someday though

Greg- we are alive, only until Santa Cruz and Sebastopol we hadn't seen a bit of cell or internet reception. The rack is great! - snug, so the tent zipper can be a bit difficult to get around, but I think is good that the tent is sitting in the rack rather than on top.... can definitely feel the weight, but so long as I remember what I am driving around the corners there is no problem! I think we may cutout a wood plank to insert into the front storage area just to give a bigger platform to the base of the water cans etc.

We are taking the next day or two here in Sebastopol to plan out the route in a bit more detail, and make some sort of plan to try and improve the MPG before we get too far into the trip- so, if you (the passive or active reader) think you might be able to take a stab at helping us tune or diagnose the MPG issue (see https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/400452-live-v8-mpg.html ) and live somewhere along our route- let me know!!!

Another discovery- I havent needed to put the rig into 4wd since changing over the new suspension....in retrospect it was a stupid thing not to test as I gained some height from the swap but alas, this whole process has been about learning through error.... put the truck into 4wd the other day and found that I have a loud popping sound coming from underneath.... I have quickly come to the conclusion (could be wrong but pretty sure its the issue) that the angle of my driveshaft has become so steep that the joint is popping as it spins... the 4wd engages just fine and works, just with that joint popping.... I think this means I either need to shim, which would inherently screw up my alignment and driving angle? or cut and turn as they do with SOA? any input here?

mpg and popping aside, it has been really great thus far. its a very exciting thing, going through twisty roads alongside cliffs in a machine that you know you constructed from the bottom up... the engine temp has stayed at a cool 190 at the max thus far with that huge aluminum fan shrowd that the PO had designed.

allright. on with the day.

cheers

Deliberate Forager

quick tech update:

some great guys in (and passing through) the medford/ashland area took time to help us sort out some of the issues we were experiencing.

looks like I'm going to be changing out the front pads in Portland as they are pretty close to nonexistant.

we ruled out any dragging or transmission issues and chalked up the slowing down on slopes to compression braking.

now for the shocking part- MPG and tuning-

I had been assuming the engine was running really rich via the fuel smell, lack of power, and poor milage.... I finally caved and took it into a small auto shop in medford that had an old snap-on diagnostics machine....

as soon as we get it all hooked up - 7 cylinder was clearly not firing ATALL and the 3rd was misfiring all over the place.... Ideal PPM reading for my engine should fall in the 175-225 (in unused gas making its way to the exhaust) but instead read 2,000!

pulled out the #7 sparkplug and the gap was entirely closed....not sure how that happened but assuming a piece of carbon (from the excessively rich FI days) came off and banged the back of the plug.... set the proper gap, re ran the test and as the 7th showed proper power the PPM dropped to 350. As we took a closer look, the #3 wire had become pinched between the power steering pump and the exhaust manifold.... burning through the heat shielding AND the wire, but not enough to burn all the way through.... thus the misfire, occasionally the wire would ground out and cause it to miss.... with a new wire, and better routing the PPM now reads 125!

Also leaned it up just a bit. The power is night and day, and soon will have updates about the MPG....

Congrats on getting your mechanical issues resolved - I'm sure it will make your road trip sooo much more enjoyable.

Great travel photos! I too am deeply envious. This is just the sort of adventure I hope to have when my 40 is complete (or at least more complete than it is now). My hat is off to you and your lady for going for it! Keep the photos coming!

Awsome awsome.

I see you read my post suggesting that you checkout Big Sur.
Good to see it finally grew back after the last big fire.

Fixing issues while on vacay made it a win win!

About to leave Portland- I think we are going to cut a bit of Washington out for a more direct route towards Montana....

Writing an an article for 4WD Toyota Owner Magazine and was reflecting on the build and this thread....laughing most of the way through all of the crazy :censor: .... CM07 definately made it into the writeup.... I actually found an old disk with some photos from Cruise Moab - and yes- while on the subject, I do plan to attend again as soon as possible...maybe next year...?

Can't remember if I had posted these back in the day, but thought they were pretty funny...I look so much younger (and so does my brother)

In the midst of making the "90 Wt" nickname.... just before, or maybe after the entire t-case worth of fluid dumped out on my chest...

another note- amazing how fast a "slow overnight drip type leak" can really drain fluid quickly... I was aware of the t-case dripping a bit each night but when I checked the levels this morning..... nothing horrendous again, but definitely took 1 and a half small bottles of 90wt.... going to keep a closer eye on those slow drips, though now that I have remedied this one (loose nose cone allen nut) he should be tip top.

oh, and headed out tomorrow morning through washington, montana bound

Ahhhh....

CM07...Seems like it was only yesterday :hillbilly:

You were the talk of the town that year :D
