My dilemma, sell as is or finish it first?

I bought this 83 last fall, on the auction site, site unseen. I knew nothing about LC's and now I know quite a bit, after rebuilding the knuckles, brakes, etc. I also found that my frame is rusted through on the inside C channel midway through the truck. At the time I planned to just swap it out, since the body is super clean with no rust and new paint, and it runs great. Plus all the work I did on the front end. So, I sourced a super clean frame and had it blasted and powdercoated, for the eventual swap. Plus an LS swap. Anyway, somewhere along the line I decided to sell this and find a much cleaner 60 that I would not worry about dropping money into ( I know that's impossible). Well the deal is done, and I bought the super clean version, and now I need to get rid of my current rig.

Question is- sell it as a project with the nice shiny frame, or have the frame swapped and throw new carpet in and sell it for more? I was quoted $2k to do the swap at a couple Cruiser specialists here in CO. Either way I'm going to lose alot of money, but I can't change that. I am going to remove the ARB bumper and the wheels/tires for my rig and replace with stock bumpers/wheels from the incoming truck. Plus a non-torn drivers seat.

Some more pics. Runs really nice. Also going to have new stock springs for it as well.

I know it's super nice!! So is the body and I know if swapped, it will be an awesome truck. Just not for me!!

Sure, great question! With the frame included, I would hope to get 10k. That's with stock bumpers and tires.

The front end work looks really nice, and with new carpet it would be a great rig. Of course there are always little things to improve though. When I pulled it apart I stripped and POR15'd every axle and brake bit (see pics). Alignment right after that. It drives straight with no slop at all now!

Full knuckle rebuild with Koyo bearings, Marlin inner axle seals.
Rebuilt manual hub locks
New brake discs, rotors, pads, calipers, and brake lines.
New Rancho Shocks (came with it but like new).
All new OEM tie rods.
New OME steering damper
New plugs n wires
New vacuum lines
Etc

damn, she sure looks good. that frame under that rig would make that truck worth a pretty penny. If all it needs is the interior put back together, then that's like a one afternoon job. Maybe you should do the frame swap and just put the thing on ebay for 20k. U never know.

That's what I'm thinking! Or for like 16k here on Mud.

Drivetrain is original stock 2f and 4spd with 154k

Yeah it's sooo clean! I'm thinking I'll just complete the build, unless someone picks it up as a project. After the frame swap all it needs is new carpet and it'll be perfect. Should sell easier all buttoned up

X2 on finishing it. You will do way better on resale.

Nice. I'd have trouble selling it at all.

With a bad frame personally I think it kills the value. 2k to swap a frame sounds suspiciously low. Plus once they get into it and find how stubborn all the rusted hardware is to get apart they are going to call u and ask for more. Toyota pays their techs 40 hours to swap a tacoma frame, and that's warranty pay and the techs hate doing them for that little. Customer pay would be 55. So 55x140hr is...well a lot. A independent smaller shop would typically charge like 100hr so that would be 5500. If you sell it to someone for 10k with the frame not installed then they have to find a shop to swap it. Even if they do find a shop to do it for 2k, then that's 12k plus the hassle of taking it to a shop and hoping they do a nice job. When a person could pay 15k and just get a clean one with a good frame and no hassle. I would put the frame under it and then sell it. I don't think anyone will give you 10k. Not enough room if something goes wrong.

I'd say finish it and recoup some of your money. You are already in it for XXXX, I'd make it a sweet rig and go for top dollar

Thanks for the replies guys, I am working with Brandon at Classic Cruisers in Salida on a quote to do the swap, I feel like I have no choice at this point. If I was a true maniac I would get some sawhorses and do it myself! Proffitt's did say they could do it for 2K as well but they are another 2hrs away, plus would need to wait till mid-summer. I am planning on the cost to swap inflating for sure, maybe even double. I am learning a lesson the hard (expensive) way I guess!!

It happens to some of us. I had this same dilemma with my old Land Rover 109 due to the rareness of that vehicle I made more parting it out.
I got lucky.

2K seems low as well I would guess you will be in it for an addition 1K and that is if they do not have to weld any body mounts.

What I would also do is before you make the Swap check with the Colorado State police on this and if they can restamp the frame, or give you a cert.
While swapping frames seems easy, insurance wise it could be a nightmare for the next person purchasing it if not recorded correctly.

Ah man thanks, I did not think of the VIN on the frame!

So the shop has declined to do the frame swap, I could ask Proffitt's but I am getting tired of moving this thing around. Anyone have more suggestions? I would do it myself but I have no shop, lift or experience. I might as well keep it and take it off some sweet jumps at this point!!

She's still looking good, I'm sure someone on the Rust Coast or midwest would be happy with her.

All back to stock now-
