My custom airbox for future snorkel upgrade

What happened to 'thinking outside the box?'



I think you should take some vacuum and idle mixture measurements before you hook that thing up to see what difference adding a second filter will make to both.

It IS an interesting concept, I'll grant you that.

Years ago [and I mean close to 20] I envisioned a secondary air box that would sit ahead of and below the OE air cleaner to use as an alternate fresh air source for the PCV system.

Oh, nice. A lot cheaper and more compact than a Donaldson.

Unfortunately, the only space I have for it is dedicated for a spare battery.

mark, what do you mean by a second filter? Are you talking about the precleaner thatbwould be in the snorkel head? If so i was under the impression that even with a precleanier the airbox still housed a airfilter.... (otherwise why would i need an airbox?)

Im asking to understand, i dont want to be misinformed from prior information

well i dont own the snorkel yet, but i can hook it up and test it, although there wont be a precleaner in the system line, for right now I only have a Weber carb and snorkel adpater kit. The snorkel purchasqe should happen in Oct/Nov

I think that is a cool idea. I hope that it works well for you. I am curious to see if the box will constrict the air flow causing your MPG's to go down. Anyway it is still a cool idea.

i think it's a cool idea. nice!!!
as long as your tubes are bigger than your carb opening you should have not issues on cfms.

i plan on making one for my baja bug.

I really like that idea, I was trying to come up with a container for the filter, I'd never have thought of using an ammo box. I guess finding one with a definitely good watertight seal is a must.

The tubing I am using is 3" and I was planning on buying a snorkel from Awl_TEQ, the port size that the snorkel adapter kit came with is 3", so I am assuming that the carb will be able to handle that without a drop in airflow. I figured I'd drop 1-2 gpm by running a snorkel, but I've also read where some people are staying the same because of even better airflow and cooler air.

I guess I just won't know until its actually mounted up and running.

The filter I bought by the way was a K&N RX-2820, and I'm using a 50 cal. ammo can, however I would suggest to anyone wanting to copy this design that they find/buy a S.A.W. ammo can as they are a little wider, (in fact a 50 cal ammo can will fit inside a S.A.W can and still have a little wiggle room.

wouldn't it be easier to remove the box use just tube under the hood and put a filter on the actual snorkel instead of that forward facing intake that comes with the safari snorkel.. ??

if you want a place to test it out i can give you directions to a trail with a farely deep water crossing (about the body of the bottom on a Body lifted 1/2 ton) you should be able to go through it in 2wd.
