Well, a while back I picked up a rusted out POS and a very nice frame and tub of similar years. The idea being to use the parts and pieces to make up one very nice FJ40. I've been collecting parts for most of a year now, so it's time to start putting things together. Here's a few pics of the buy and where I am now. The plan is to be a very streetable, yet off road capable Land Cruiser that my daughter can drive.

I love how they didn't paint under the dash pads :)

I just picked up a 25hp air compressor for nearly free. Going to set it up this weekend. A little overkill for a die grinder, but the sand blaster will be happy! Nice, clean shiny metal to work with. Also, I ordered complete steering setup & brackets from 4x4labs last night. This weekend is going to be nice! Will be wrenching most all of it.

Looks awesome, congrats. The sandblaster is my favorite tool.

Well, I spent the majority of Saturday and Sunday taking parts off. The tub...unbelievably difficult. ALL the bolts were rusted and seized, but not a big deal: the attachment points were rusted so bad, they just tore out. But not before I had to cut through all the channel the PO had used to fab up the roll bar placement.

But the tub is free. This gave me a chance to pressure wash the black paint off the old tan color someone spayed -everything- with, but over the grease and grime. I couldn't get all the grime off, but it's better and most of the bolts are at least visible. The engine is out, too.

I was able to clean the engine enough to see the casting numbers. It's a 1968 327 300hp from who knows what. I'll not be using this engine. I have a '94 5.7L out of a Tahoe that's going to be freshened up and used. If anyone wants a good running (it did run good!) 327 for a hotrod build, this might be a good candidate.

The spring over conversion is going to be completely re-done. Look at this pinion angle....

I just picked up a blasting cabinet on CL. A really BIG cabinet (I can fit a fender in there!) with the dust collector, gun, foot pedal, air dryer, the works! I have a soda blaster for use outside, but the cabinet is new to me. What media do you use in yours? I can't decide what would be best. I'll be cleaning all the parts, removing paint and rust, before repainting. Seems like aluminum oxide might be best and last a good while. I wonder if I'd be creating a type of thermite.

Any abrasive suggestions?

Thanks!

I'm using either this:

Glass Beads Abrasive

or this:

Skat Magic™ Abrasive

I like black beauty coal slag. extra fine. Wear a mask when blowing.

Happy Day to me!! I just unboxed the steering gear from Luke at 4x4labs. The Saginaw mounting frame plates, behind the axle 6-bolt hi steer arms, pitman arm, steering links and steering column and adapters. This is going on the new frame this weekend.... :-)
