Builds My attempt at bringing another FJ40 back to life

I'm confused by your tranny/transfer. I have a '71 and the transfer shifter is to the right of the transmission shifter and of course the holes are cut differently in the hump. What's up with that?

Sure wish I had the know-how so many of you guys have on here. The vast majority of stuff I read is way over my head. Gotta quit reading, makes me feel DUMB(ER).

Well....I got the engine to barely run last night. On full choke it needed a couple squirts of fuel from the accelerator pump to start. Turns out my idle fuel solenoid malfunctioned. I excitedly installed my backup solenoid with high hopes for a smooth idle. It then wouldn't start. So I called it quits for the night.

I got it started this morning but it was backfiring out the carb. Fuel level is a smidge above site glass center. I messed with the air/fuel mixture screw, dizzy, idle speed screw(which didn't do much). It was still backfiring. I also plugged all the vacuum lines, which worsened how it ran.

My next step is check valve lash with engine cold.

Sooo this evening I cut out a section of crushed exhaust pipe and welded a new section on.

To be continued..

I readjusted my valves last night and reinstalled the origional "rotor button" @JohnnyC ;). I "zeroed" my octane adjuster. Probably the key the acheiving smooth idle today was plugging manifold vac at the booster. That allowed me to time the dizzy. Ahh. What a difference!

My 76 projects maiden voyage was on the 4th last year. So I was hoping for success today. Everything came together and I took the 71 for a drive on the 4th of July. I like having 2 low and 2 high.

I did discover issues I need to address. My new side cover gasket is leaking like a sieve. Also, when the engine eventually died and wouldn't restart, I noticed both nozzles were dripping fuel. Fuel level was high in my sight glass. Also heard a click that seemed to be coming from "good" backup solenoid, maybe a minute after turning the key off. I'm wondering if a stuck open solenoid could be why fuel continued to drip from the nozzles. Or if it could be from an improperly adjusted float? I also noticed fuel leaking out of the primary throttle plate shaft onto the carb base. I never could have gotten this far without the educational carb posts and video that @Pin_Head has made available.

I think my next step is to fiddle with my carb and see if Marks Offroad can send me his Pertronix kit.

Had a nice Christmas dinner with my wife and daughters. Only 1 more gift to wrap before I call it a day.

Figured I'd update.

I hooked up a column mount vacuum gauge. T'd into the booster line. Not crazy about the platic capillary tube in the kit. Might switch out to AN -3 later.

My PO bolted a heavy steel 4"x5" tube off the rear and then welded a home brew bumper to that. So I sliced hole through both layers of steel to access the bolts. Sliced the heads off the bolts, used a floor jack to pressure a bumper corner. Then she popped off.

Wire wheeled the rear member, added some OEM lights and my mud classifieds bumperettes. Have a new Coolerman rear harness to go in next.

Installed a new booster and silicone hose but when I brake my vacuum drops and the ol' girl wants to die. Guessing it's a bad booster but I'll double check a couple things before I send it back.

Stiil want to order Mark's Pertronix's and need to do a running valve adjustment. I think they are to tight.

Merry Christmas to all.

I gottta know....but what the heck are the suction and pressure knobs for on the dash

I have no idea Landpimp. I've been wondering.

Is the dash light left of "PRESSURE" usually the front drive indicator light? It appears to be faded blue in color.

To the right of "SUCTION" is the choke
To the right of "PRESSURE" is the wiper knob

My guess is that they were part of the PO's whimsical nature... My first '74 spent time as an airplane tug for his company at the San Antonio Airport (He said it pulled a DC9 once). It still has "fasten seat belt while seated" and "life vest in seat pocket" stickers on both sides of the dash.

Good point. Could be a PO's humerous brush stroke. A glass pipe did fall out of the heater when I unbolted it:smokin: Found lots of spent casing's and what appears to be a fishing spear.

wow. keep it stock. very nice cruiser.
Thanks. I'm trying to stick with all Japanese parts. It seems to me the older TEQ parts are slighly higher quality.

Well...my love of wire wheeling got the best of me today. I cleaned up a modern valve cover for my F motor.

I noticed the valve cover grommets that I have differ slightly. Anyone know whether the grommets are from different years or is that just how they came on a 2F?

New Years eve was spent putzing around with the cruiser. Did another round of cleaning up the crud inside my tub. You know....coins, beer caps, spent casings, carpet under the rear heater, rust flakes, ect.
Pulled my gauge cluster and wired my idle solenoid to my FD light. Funny thing is, I realized today Coolerman sent me a plug n' play I.S. pigtail that would have saved me from pulling my cluster to get my crimpers in the dash.:)
Also my in-dash brake indicator would only illuminate occasionally so I cleaned the switch up and it works as it should now.

The grommets with the smaller hole are FJ40. The larger are fj60.

what kind of cleaning method to keep engine cover so shiny?

I want to remove my steering wheel. Is the little spring holding the inner plate permanently attached? I would like to get it out of my way. I assume juice flows through it to make the horn work.

*edit*
I guess an overnight soak in "Deep Creep" penatrant loosened things up. It just slid out today.
