If there was no one else out there, you could have camped in the road.

Hypothetically. ;)

Good to know your still getting it out there.Weather has been awesome. Been doing a fair amount of bicycle riding, and planning to get out to the desert camping next weekend with some friends.

Hypothetically... had I been alone, I would have stayed at least one night...but, I can’t chance my boys being snakebit.

I was hiking daily, until I went to camp the refuge and found they closed down the whole place.

I wouldn’t have hiked any place I saw at Stirling... it wouldn’t have been fun, brush was much too dense and snaky.

But, it’s a good place to drive.

Anything I do has to be near home for the foreseeable future, so I may try Angel Peak next week. But, camping with snakes is out, with my boys.

I've been up in that area a lot, nice and quiet, I've never seen anyone else. I recall one drainage/road we drove up and found some nice stands of Ponderosa. Did you do a loop from US 95, just west of the Clark/Nye boundary to/from opposite the Mercury turn-off?

I went in at CL 131, southbound side of 95 (Clark County)... All I saw was a Tundra and trailer... someone was running a bike/ATV/etc., but I never saw them, or anyone at all.

Mile marker CL 131 is NFS ???553 (OnX Hunt names it “Noides Road”). If you take the left fork (555), off of 553 (where 553 enters a drainage), 555 runs up that drainage all the way to the WSA boundary... and apparently beyond. OnX Hunt showed me actually driving in the WSA.

There are two primitive campsites, each under a stand of juniper. It was oppressively hot up in that draw... even though is ~6k’. Shortly after the second campsite, the trail became fraught with VERY sharp, pointy rocks and I g nervous about tire damage.

I was also a little concerned about a steep, sandy hill I had descended... turned back and actually had no problem getting up that hill... I never saw Ponderosa Pine, but it could be beyond where I turned back.
Also drove south on 540, to a big drainage... the track was nonexistent (from prior runoff) ... but Onx Hunt showed the road going up the drainage. So, I found my way into the gravel bed and drove until I ran into a huge pile of juniper blocking my path... backtracked and drove offshoot tracks all the way back to 95.

Since my dogs are always with me, I don’t chance snakebite... they hike on-leash in snake season and we camp above 8k’ at that time... but, I won’t be able to make a trip like that for a while.

You're right, the turn-off is still in Clark County - I should have remembered that seeing as how I drove by there four or five days a week for many years. The highest I've driven in that area is about 6,430 feet, just NE of the Mt. Sterling summit, below Gold Spring. And the other road I mentioned further west is actually right at the summit on US 95 before you drop down to the Mercury exit.

Yep, I’m familiar with the other turnoff... makes a loop with 553. There’s also a way in from the other side... off 160.

Just over a year ago. It was time to get closer to family. My folks and my wife's folks aren't getting younger, and we want our kids to really know their grandparents and their cousins. While we were overseas nearly all my wife's family relocated here... and my folks keep threatening to leave KS and move to the Southwest somewhere. So here we are. I've enjoyed stretching the 40's legs in non-Arabian desert. =)

I’ll bet!!

Welcome home!!

I finally have something to say about 44.

About 9 weeks ago, I crawled under her and removed the skid plate, in preparation of checking/adjusting the Parking Brake.

While there, I noticed the front driveshaft had three nice, big dimples on one side.

I had never seen this before, so I’m not positive they were always there... I do recall a large “bump” last time I had her off road, but I thought it was from the PS... I had checked there and couldn’t find anything amiss.

I also recalled a time that I forgot to return to 2WD, before I entered a highway, until I reached ~55 and felt a shimmy. That was 5-6 years ago. But, it never happened at lower speeds, so I figured I’d take care of it “later” and put it out of my memory.

Anyway, after checking the rear tube and finding It fine, I decided to drop the front driveshaft and have a new one built.

As soon as I retreived my tools and back under, I noticed some minor chest pain.

I climbed out and waited for my angiogram appointment (below).
———— ——————————————

Medical Background:

I’ve been having shortness of breath “under load” for three or four years... ANY incline has left me sick to my stomach and gasping for breath. Mark (@65swb45) may recall our hike.

Each time, I’d stop and recover and move on... but, the periods between recoveries kept getting shorter and shorter. The last hike, I could only make 1 mile up an incline barely above level.

I scheduled my annual cardiologist visit for March and then had to cancel it when NV shut down.

In early April, I found myself taking deep breaths, every few minutes, because I couldn’t get enough air. Since NV was still shut down, I ordered a volumeter and worked with it daily. I improved steadily, on the volumeter, but was still gasping frequently.

In June, I consulted a Pulmonologist and learned I have “almost 100% lung capacity”... so, why short of breath? She told me to see my cardiologist, to ensure I didn’t have an arrhythmia and then come back to her.

I saw my Cardiologist and he said, my EKG “changed” from last year’s, so I scheduled an angiogram.

The angiogram discovered two blockages in one artery... The Cardiologist performed an angioplasty and broke up the two clots and placed a stent.

A week later, I followed-up and told my Cardiologist that I had no improvement in my shortness of breath. He referred me back to the Pulmonologist.

When I saw the Pulmonologist, she told me she suspected I was no longer able to expel a full breath, so it accumulated and “eventually” I can’t inhale a full breath... thus the gasping.

She gave me enough Breo Ellipta “dust” inhaler to last a month. I used it for 6 days and, 3 days in, the side effects became so debilitating that I could get out of bed until 5 hours after I used it. It remained the same for 3 days.

I called my Pulmonologist and she changed me to a mist inhaler (Stiriva Respimat). I started it this morning and feel better (thus far) than I have in over a year. I’m not weak, totally exhausted and have noticed very few “breathing“ incidents.

I’m hoping this clears up my breathing issues... but scheduled a CT with Contrast, regardless.

I have high hopes that I’ll be able to return to the things I love doing.
———————————————————-

In the middle of all this, I scheduled an appointment with Dan’s Driveline and last Thursday, I took 44 in and had a new front driveshaft installed and the diffs, grabby and tcase flushed. The u-joints were all fine and the rear driveshaft was fine.

So, assuming I can... 44 is ready to go... after I reinstall the skid plate.

I started to post something yesterday about your, and the boys, absence. Glad to hear you are feeling better. So...ummm, where are the boys?

They’re asleep on both sides of me:cool:

Chester has become my YouTube partner. He begs to watch Eagles hunt, a Cockatiel named “Gotcha” (who curses and rants) and any MMA fights.:D

Teddy sleeps, while we watch... I’m not sure he can even see the TV picture.

They haven’t had much exercise in 4 months... but, if this inhaler works out as well as it has today, they’ll start getting exercise soon... at 4am.

Yup, you’d better get some dust and scratches on that driveshaft before somebody mistakes you for a poser. :p

It always sucks to have surgery then find out that didn’t fix the problem. That’s why they call it the practice of medicine.

When I got into competitive road cycling in my 30s I discovered I had the same symptom. Fortunately for me, I read a magazine article that suggested focusing on exhaling, and I found it worked (and still does) for me.

It takes years to try and change an ingrained habit, especially one like breathing! And I hate to be the one to tell you this, but there’s a dark side. Shallower breathing makes it easier to fall asleep. Now you’re going to have to exercise a lot more to get as tired by bedtime as shallow breathing made you.

When do you want to start training?

:grinpimp:
