minus the
Playing chicken on the switchbacks.
it worked ;p
Cool! You did the fun hill between the slickrock and stock tank! My favorite!

Howdy! Several years ago when it was first announced that the Magma Mine would reopen a large operation, it went into great detail about how the ore was too deep to mine as a conventional strip mine. The Republic ran a large story with some diagrams of how the mining would actually take place remote control style. IIRC, they were going to pipe steam/chemicals down into the ore beds and then suck the goodies back up to process it. I know they have already built a slurry pipe line down the old railroad track back towards Chander/Queen Creek. Has this changed? I'm sure even if it hasn't, that they will limit access around a lot of the area, but it would not be as bad/permanent as a strip mine. JohnOf course! You made us feel like we missed the best part of that area last time we went there and didn't find 'little Moab'.We had to hit it on our next trip to the vicinity. Besides, soon it will be gone.

I was up there in early April with Joe Chott. We started at Oak Flat and went north on 342? to the rock house. A couple of years ago, we had gone up Montana Mtn from west to east, and there was a bad land slide east of the rock house so we couldn't get thru. We wanted to see if it was open again. The mine roads were all locked up for us too, so I located the bypass and we ran that. We ended up driving the gravel road along Queen Creek, west of Superior, and the constructions crews were just about done laying that pipeline in thru there. I wonder if someone at the FS can tell us what the current plan is? JohnI have heard both, that they are using the new high tech and that it's too expensive, so moving to the open pit style. With the nice open pit across the street, that is pumping bright green water into the creek, it doesn't look good. The big pipe was still on the tracks, but sections are cut out?
Howdy! The original Magma tracks go from the mines all the way into the valley, and it ties into a north-south line that parallels Rittenhouse Rd near Queen Creek. I'm not sure exactly where the ore was processed, but that is definitely a heavy duty rail line. I have walked a lot of it looking for rock/ore samples. There is a lot of strange rock out there in all the cuts and fills. From Florence Junction towards Chandler, there is a steel 8" waterline? following the track. There are a lot of wells and tanks in that area, which is mostly State Trust Land. Rumor has it that area will become a Megatropolis within 20 - 30 years. JohnI saw the pipe tube by the tracks on the way in - had been wondering to myself what it was for...
