Whatever is good for you guys. I've never been so don't really know what to expect. I got 15th-18th off this month so I should be good to go.

There are always cancellations. We will not be too large as to need a permit depending on how we arrange the group. Were are at 6, maybe 7. But if it turns out necessary I'll apply for the permit. :)

As far as camping goes there should be is more than enough room at all the camp spots for 7 rigs. Most of us will be on 2 meter so we do not need to run line of sight although that is always a good idea.

I don't know if I will be down to truck it all night and try to find you guys at Hole in the wall camp around midnight Thursday night. So I think Ryan and I will leave Blythe first thing Friday morning and hit the trail starting off of the Needles Hwy around 10:30 Friday morning. I will monitor you guys on the HAM (I have two weekends to get some repeaters dialed in and learn how to use this thing) and if we catch up to you guys we will toast a .

Sounds good Mark. 3 outta four San Diego guys just cancelled on the last head count so I'm going to try and get the trail leader Ollie to change his itinerary and cut it back to a 3 dayer so we can all run this together. I'll keep you posted. :)

I was just searching for your screenname Mark so I could get your email address. I'm the one leading the four day run Scott mentioned. I'm from Eastlake down in the San Diego area as well. I was really hoping I could make this a four dayer. It makes for a much more relaxed trip and I wanted to see some sights I hadn't seen. This is a B-Day run for me as well. Mine is on the 17th. Let me look at some things and see what I can adjust. I won't run that far from home on my own so if everyone else wants a three day run then that's the smarter play. I guess another option is to run it from Afton Canyon Campground and head east. Then we can bail off when we dub it time to bail in order to get home in time Sunday evening, most of the real highlights are on the west end of the trip anyway. It also makes for a shorter drive on Thursday night/Wednesday morning. I would probably drive in Thursday night and camp at Afton Canyon Campground to be ready for an early departure on Friday. For those driving in that have to work late on Thursday I think that makes more sense. There is a $6.00 fee for camping at the Afton Campsite. I am applying for a permit this weekend so the number of rigs is not an issue. I would only ask that each rig bring a few dollars to donate to the permit fee.

If any of you want included in on this run planning please PM me your email address so I can add you to the emails going back and forth and send you the GPX and GDB files with the route.

Well this is working out well. I think this plan makes everyone happy and I'm up for West to East, never done it that way..

I just talked to the LA bunch leaving really late Thursday night. They would still rather run east to west and meet at the Avi Casino Parking lot. The have gas and we can top off the tanks there. They prefer to have a short drive home after we're off the trail. It doesn't matter either way. So we'll plan on a three day run from Avi to Afton Canyon.

Mark,
If yopu are up for running with us, can you meet any earlier than 10:30 on Friday morning? 10:30 will work but the earlier we start the better.

Alright Ollie, let me look at things. The main reason I am not taking half a day on Thursday is because my Dad has an important hard to get appointment at the VA in LA at 1:00 on Thursday. So he will be out and on his way to Murrieta at 2:00. I am going to look at where that Avi casino is and I will let you guys know.

Ollie, I will PM you my e-mail and cell#.

Thanks

Avi Casino

The Avi Casino is literally a few hundred yards away from the start of the Mojave road on the California side. The casino is reasonably priced and very convenient.

Olie, OK we will get to the AVI Thursday night and we can all start together.

Ryan, I am now planning to get to Murrieta before 5:00. I guess taking the 15 to Barstow and across the 40 only takes about 4.5 hours from Murrieta rather than the back roads I was looking at last week. So would you be ready to roll by 5:00-5:30?
I am going to make my reservations today for the Avi.

The important part of leaving Friday is getting up early and getting the hell out ASAP. Top off tanks, buy fireworks or at least marvel at them (you'll see) Ollie is calling for a 10:30am or earlier departure in his email. IMO that is two hours too late. In my experience you call for an 8:30am and we'll be lucky to leave by 9:30am.Top off tanks, check oil, hoses, etc. check the rig, tighten down the junk on the roof, especially firewood. BTW everybody needs to bring as much as they can stuff on in/on their rig, there is nothing out there to burn. Gotta have extra fuel too, I know Ollie already mentioned it but it seems like every trip somebody shows up without extra cans. Whohoooooo, getting closer!:bounce:

Yeah, an 8:30 start would be better IMO, I probably won't hardly sleep in anticipation anyway. I only have 1 Nato can for extra fuel but I should be fine with that.

I am going to toy with strapping a few wood bundles to the empty space where my spare tire used to be.
Flip the cross brace around and space it the opposite way from what I did for the spare tire back in the day.

Firewood

Instead of doing that Mark you might consider just buying a couple at the Safeway across the river in Fort Mojave if you get up early and you can throw them on my rig. I'll confirm the storen has wood in stock before departure from Costa Mesa. It's one less thing to worry about. There are several of us who are running solo and should have some extra room for storage.:) BTW it's usually the guys with the Hummer's or Suburban's who bring no spare gas. :D

Couple of questions, do the camp sites have a out house or do we need to plan on packing out our waste?

Oh and Ollie are you done revising the navi file yet?

There are no facilities at the campsites we are visiting as far as I know Mark, only Mid Hills and Hole in the Wall have toilets . Ollie sent out a revised GPX file. What is a navi file, I remember seeing that term on the navigation system for a motor-home we rented?

3. Dispose of Waste Properly

Store all food and garbage in a manner that will prevent access by wildlife. Carry plastic bags and pack out all trash.
While LNT guidelines suggest burying human waste, the fragile nature of the desert ecosystem has prompted managers to implement a policy of removing all human waste. Please pack out what you bring in.

Mark,

I know you just got a new Delorme program. I have a Delorme program too. I'm going to send out another email tonight or tomorrow. We had someone else drop back in and he needs the file(s) too. I'll attach a few types of files. GPD (Garmin Data Base), TPO (TOPO 4.0), GPX (GPD Exchange Format), and TPX (Delorme File).

Mid Hills Campground (Friday night's camp) does have facilities. They vault toilets as I recall. Saturday night's site is primitive. You can haul it out or bury it.

We're camping at Mid Hills, crap I got the living hell bit out of me last time I was there. It was freezing cold, foggy and I still got bit by some damn chiggers. Should be nice and warm this time around.

FYI-

Your GPX file opens fine in my Delorme 7.0
