Well that's a disapointment... I wonder about the tach output from the Fuso ECU.

That might work. If you have access to an oscilloscope, check the signals put out by the FJZ80 ECM and the Fuso ECM. You are comparing voltage and frequency for a given rpm. If you are lucky they will be similar. This would actually be a better solution than the ABS sensor route.

If the voltage is the same, but the frequency is different, I wonder if a dakota digital speedo healer would actualy work on the tach...

Most of the guys running LS Chevy motors have had good luck with the Dakota Digital box. That is the route I am planning on taking. The Fuso ECU has a dedicated ground for the tach. Since the Toyota tach relies on chassis ground, I am a bit concerned as to how to hook it up. I will probably just ground the ground and hook up the tach wire to the tach + on the ECU, but I figured I would do this once I am driving it. I'm almost certain it will work with the dakota box, it acts as a signal conditioner as well as a frequency alterer. The diesel version is infinitely adjustable so you can just scroll up to the correct rate using an optical or mechanical tach.

At least it seems my thoughts were on the right track... thanks for the info!

Excellent! Pulling the harness is a PITA. I will get you those diagrams soon.

Actually it might be easier for you as you can cut the harness in the area where it goes through the floor of the cab. I wanted to keep it intact to test the engine out. You already have.

The harness is super long and must be shortened so it would save you from feeding the plugs through the floor.

Good point... I may just do that!

I plan on backing my trailer up to the front of the truck and tilting the cab right onto the trailer to bring it to the scrapper, just need to make sure I get everything I need out of it first!

From what I can see there is a little knob by the key that seems to raise the idle when pulled, I can install that where the raise-idle cable would be installed in the dash of the FZJ80. Need to figure out where to mount the glow plug switch and exhaust brake switch.

Well, had a fun 4th of July weekend pulling the donor apart... now it's time to start shopping for a used A442F!

Here you can see the cab loaded up, the frame stripped down, and the frame getting dropped off at the local auto recycler. So far I've recycled the cab and the rolling chassis...

1999 Fuso Donor - $1800
Towing charge - $425
Pair of Diehard Platinums - $365
Cab Recycling - $122
Chassis Recycling - $310

Running Total - $2158

I don't expect to make money or break even on this deal, but I definitely want to keep track of my real-world cost of conversion.

I'm now shopping for an A442F Donor. I know I need the trans and the transfer shifter... I'm pretty sure I can use my existing TC, can anyone confirm/deny this or think of anything else I need drivetrain-wise that is different on my 96?

I bought a 3m length of threaded rod for my improvised trans tool and some 12mm drill rod to make my extended dowels out of. Next time I'm at Home Depot/Lowes I'll pick up a 4" PVC cap. I'll also need some big baking pans to soak the clutches/metals in ATF as I do my rebuild...

Dropped off the last load of AL this morning and ordered a A442F yesterday. Once I get the trans I'll start on my teardown/rebuild. Going to wait until the AW450-43LE is apart before I decide which rebuild kit to buy...

Looks like a good start.
I live in the desert and air conditioning is very very nice. So my question is if you flip the exhaust like Fromage did will you be able to keep the ac compressor were it is?

I was wanting Fromage to leave the AC on his motor but he didn't.

Thanks

Correction, my Fuso did not have A/C, I have to build a custom bracket for the Toyota compressor, it's on the list... I want A/C :)

I absolutely will be keeping AC, this truck is my Daily, and it was 109 degrees with 80+% Relative Humidity yesterday. There is no way I would do a swap without it.

The issue is whether I decide to keep the Fuso compressor or try to adapt the Toyota compressor. From the looks of Fromage's pictures, there appears to be enough room for it even with the turbo flipped.

I didn't realize your donor didn't have AC...

Tell me, does your engine still have a readable EPA tag?

I just steam cleaned it this week, I'll go check.
