I took the 60 out for a spin in Yazoo County. Found some great gravel backroads

Beautiful day for a long smoke and drive.

Went to Ebeneezer

There is a cool store there that is on my list for lunch. Plate and burgers. Lots of hunting in that area

The only thing the 60 can pass on the left

This was a 10 mile gravel road. Ancient road bed. The trees were magnificent

The guy at the store told me about this road. It went back south to Vaughn. I got pics on my camera. Really cool. About 8 miles of gravel.

Good day for a trip. It's pretty remarkable when you think about just how many gravel public roads are no longer there. It's not that you can't find them, but they're definitely the exception, rather than the rule. (I guess it's no surprise you found a long one in Holmes County)

Been LOTSA pavin' goin on......

David, in years past I would rush home to waste 3 hours in a deer stand. Now I find it more appealing to grab a cigar and the Pigs and hit the road in the 60 to explore. There was lots more over there, I look forward to heading back.

This awesome house was in Deasonville. I sure would like to know more about it.

And home. I got home in time to ease up to the powerline by my shop and see 4 deer. They are safe unless they are grandpa

Wow, I've actually been down Lemon Road before. It's prolly been 10 years, and I don't remember really anything about it, but I do remember wondering where the name came from...

Man, I used to explore like that all the time.......I've got to start doing it again. Photos like yours remind me that I really miss seeing new areas of the State.

There is so much to see. I swear if that bridge was in Arkansas it would be a destination location. It's in a swamp in Vaughn.....

I'm going to get a trip going in February that will take us from the Rez to Batesville on dirt roads.....I think it has been discussed before. Mississippi Hill Country Trail on the web. Dual Sport guys do it.

I have a guy in Belzoni that said we could camp on his property on the Yazoo River near that cool bridge. We could make a big loop. Camp one night.

A good resource for finding those unpaved roads is county road maps. Here's the link for pdfs of MS county maps Mississippi Department Of Transportation | GoMDOT.com. The state also sells hard copies and that's what I would go for; they should be cheap. Hard copies are great because you can pencil in notes, etc. Road legends will indicate if the road is paved or not, locations of churches and other landmarks.

In AL I use county road maps frequently to locate those way-out-of-the-way places.

Very nice Vaughan/Deasonville area pics! We spend a lot of time in that area with family and I was married near there. My wife's great-great-great-great grandfather is Major Henry Vaughan. He and other family members are buried in a private family cemetery on the edge of what once was his "Madley" plantation (Hicks Road). Some amazing old stuff out there!

Greenville has a really historical airport I had no idea existed.

It was selected in 1940 as the location for an Army Air Base to train B-24 pilots. Later it was used as we transitioned to jets during the Cold War. I can only imagine the number of guys that got their wings here.

During the mid 40s DC-9s transported passengers and there is still a small group of privately owned planes here.

It has that feel of hallowed ground as there are a few old barracks still here and one really cool hanger (my picture sucked). It's relatively easy to get around and if you are in the Greenville area it's worth a look. 5 nautical miles north according to this site.

Greenville Air Force Base (Mississippi) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia this also goes into more detail on the airports role in both wars.

In the early 50's the base, which was retired as a Military installation after WWII was again called into service to train Cold War Jet pilots and became Greenville Air Force Base.

Who knew that a full-fledged Air Training Command basic single-engine pilot training school was located in Greenville in the 50s!?

anyway it's certainly hallowed ground and after an hour of poking around I recommend going to Doe's for dinner.
