Hi guys- I have an FJ 40 I'm working on, but in the mean time, I bought a 1983 Toyota mini truck 4x4 long bed for my son. It appears to be completely stock except for 31" tires. It has a 5 speed and you need to go 55 or better to use 5th gear, it seems to need lower gears. I presume it has 411's stock according to researching this excellent tech section, so my question is, should I go to 456's or 488's knowing that we will be putting 33" tires on it in the near future and possibly 35" way down the road? Would I be better off with 529s or would that be too low for 33" tires that will be on it for a good while? Not too confusing:)? Bottom line, best gear ratio for 33" tires with the long term possibility of 35" tires.

40-5.71

I have 4.88's in now, and I run BFG AT KO's in 33x10.50 size during the winter, my speedometer and odometer are dead on when I checked them against a GPS. Gearing seems a perfect match to me.

I run my 35x12.50 BFG MT's during the summer, and it's not bad on the road.

My vote is for 4.88's, you'll still be fine when you get to 35's in the future.

Thank you, guys, exactly the info I was looking for. Would Randy's ring and pinion be a good source, or somewhere else? What an awesome site.

Howdy! I run 5:29's on my mini with 35's. Very streetable and does around 65-70 at 3000 rpm. I don't like to cruse much higher than that with the original engine at 200,000 miles on it. I bought mine with a Detroit locker in it from Randy's. Good service, no hassles about the exchange $$$ showing up on my credit card after I mailed the old one back. John

Another vote for 4.88. I ran 4.88 and 33's on my 85 xcab, but didn't like the rpm on the freeway. It was great around town. Currently, I run 4.56 in the 4Runner with 33's, but that engine is not stock and it does OK, but not great. At least I'm not screaming rpms getting where I want to be. A R151F will solve the around-town driving.

I am looking at an 85 xtra cab. what were the rpm's and mpg's like with 4.88's and 33's?

 (CANT FIND O.D RATIO!!! ...aggggggggg!)

1:
@70 mph* (x) OD ratio** (x) final drive ratio = _

2:
_ / (divided by, any tire dia) 33 (all : is same as .) = _

3:
_ x (x, multiplied by) 336 = Rpm @ 70 mph

* or any mph you want

**or dont it would be the same as 1:1 a four speed a non OD tranns

step 2: rpm at mph
mph x final drive ratio x O.D ratio (no O.D is 1) / tire dia x 336 = rpm at the mph.

Got that?

Geez.

I can't find my mileage book, but I seem to recall 17mpg on the freeway with 22re, 4.88, 33s, and 5 speed.
RPMs were at least 3200rpm at 70mph, which it did easy with that gearing.

To compare my 4Runner with 4.56 and 33s runs around 2900rpm at 70. Mileage is about the same, 17mpg.
