Hey all - been having a tough time in 40 land. I have been trying to install the jtoutfitters power steering kit. First off, DO NOT BUY it from jt outfitters, what a mistake purchasing from them…came with miss-drilled holes, 2 months+ delay, missing parts, unresponsive… buy from valley hybrids instead…

As I was installing the pulley - I took the #13 head bolt out and found it had super bad wear on it, which I discovered was caused by the exhaust manifold stud being driven too far in where it then was interfering with the head bolt shaft. Must have been this way for a long time.

So I yoinked the exhaust stud, ordered a new one, and ordered a new head bolt, direct from Toyota.

Head bolt: Part No.: 90910-02050
Exhaust manifold stud: 90116-12321

Unfortunately, neither arrived matching the originals. Doing research, the new bolt I received even matches the head bolt city racer sells, so I’m confused why it’s different. The bolt is longer and the thread looks different..

For the exhaust stud, it’s much larger and thicker.

I guess I’ll just buy from SOR and hope it’s right?

It's been a while but I bought a clutch master and slave plus a braded stainless hose from JT Outfitters on eboy - really great price and fast shipping - everything fit and still functions nicely.

You might actually have an F head on a 2F block. Exhaust studs are thinner on the older heads. F head on a 2F with flat top pistons gives you a little more compression and power. Mine was set up this way when I bought my 40 but I didn't know it until I had the engine rebuilt in the 90s.

This would make a lot of sense actually. My 40 was one of our old ranch land cruisers, we had 3 of them - '74 '76 and '77. This is the '77 with a rebuilt engine probably ~15 years ago. THANK YOU cruiserkev.

I'll see if I can find F head bolts and an F stud? Or would I still need the 2F head bolt since the block is 2F? The existing bolt is probably 1/4" longer than the new bolt I bought.

I found a thread from a number of years ago where pighead laid out a bunch of different head bolts and the ones I have are in the photo:

Here is a better comparison of the studs:

I wonder if that chewed up headbolt is from an F engine. If you've got a 2F head and a 2F block I'd use 2F headbolts. I might worry that a too-long headbolt would bottom out.
I "thought" that all the manifold studs in a 2F head were m12? It being a farm truck, could someone have stripped the threads and put in an insert?

Super weird - well I found the threads to be the same, I incorrectly thought they were different. I stuck a tap in to check the depth and found that I had the room, so I used the 2F bolt and it worked out and seated fully! Thank you everyone!

Now I just need to figure out this stud, which is a pretty similar dimension to an F stud ( 90116-10042), which is confusing.

I have cheep calipers so these could be off a bit. Does anyone know the thread pitch for the F stud?

The plate that JT uses for the pump is somewhat thick 1/4”? So even the longer bolt would work fine imo

Curious about the long one (originally there) how much longer is it exactly?

My PS pump mount uses the first two head bolts on that side … never an issue … if you were concerned at all about the threads not going its full length

That's a great point on the longer bolt for the thicker plate.

The original was the shorter bolt - rather than the longer - and I was able to seat it fully!

I found for the early 2F at least this one:

90116-12321L=40, S=23&13

The length is 40mm the S is the thread lengths 23 and 13

The shank on yours must be same F studs as mine measures 20 and 13 with a length of 37
