They do tighten the speakers up a bit under power - but yes , too soft to really make a lot of difference and I'm sure some woofer designs they might create a back-bounce and distortion . Closing in the ends of the box would be optimal...

I built the speaker enclosures we've been discussing, here's the process followed. Thanks to @ginmtb and @Weber Sarge and all others for the great ideas!

Cut top cover to fit box
Sealed top cover to base and screwed down

I didn't like the contrast of the beige OEM sun visor color against the black console, so my 
wife offered to recover the sun visors to match the overhead console material and color which is black.
We purchased new material from Joanne Fabrics and my wife did her sawing machine magic and viola new sun visors!
I'm pretty happy with the end result so wanted to share this pic.

You should definitely notice an improvement in bass response. Did you caulk around the 1x1 material? Probably not 100% critical but if you're taking the time to make the box it would be good if it were fully sealed. Report back when you can crank it up!

I had couple of minutes to troubleshoot the wiring and found the culprit that was causing a short and promptly fixed it and installed the console for the last time. Here's a pic energized and illuminated console.

There's at least a two inch gap between the speaker and sun visor, so not too worried about it.
I know this is an old post but worthy of additional compliments...."nice job" . I like everything about it. The matching sun visors were a great idea. Another project for me to add to me ever growing list.
