Hey, so my question is how is the sound coming out of that box. At highway speeds can people in the back hear somewhat decent?

Please be more specific as to which box you are referring to.

I mean your console, Mike - the one you made out of pine boards and automotive fabric. Are you happy with the sound?

I am also interested in Kevin's console made out of aluminum. I would think that it would have completely different sound characteristics. How does your console, Kevin, sound?

Sorry, there are quite a few consoles here and wanted to be sure. The sound is outstanding, I also have two speakers behind the seats. The front speakers are rated at approximately 150 watts, the rears I don't remember, the overall sound quality is pure and no harmonic distortion. I highly recommend a console.

Thanks Mike for the response. What does it sound like with the rear speakers disconnected (just the front ones working)? I need every square inch of room in the rear of my 40 so that automatically rules out rear speakers.

I put a second floor rack in mine and put speakers on it in the back(mine are boxed speakers)

My rear speakers are vertically mounted on the roll bar therefore they don't take up any floor space. The front speakers, with the rear speakers turned off, sound equality great. The trick is not to use cheap speakers, I used three way speakers at 150 watts each x 2. Low watt speakers can be over-driven by the head unit, dependent on head unit rated wattage, and thus you'll experience a high level of distortion and flutter.

Mike, I saw pictures of your second floor rack and is great for mounting speakers and storing things, good job!

Mine is pretty quiet, but I haven't mounted the head unit yet LOL

For the rears I will be making a set of enclosures that mount in the upper corners. I envision them bolting to the roof bolts and aiming a 6x9 slightly in and down.

Did you build a sealed enclosure in your console for the speakers? That would make those speakers sound even better.

I don't have a console but used cheap waterproof speakers ($17/pair) that are fully enclosed and small - one set in front and one in the back mounted on the roll cage. I splurged on a nice Alpine amp and Rockford Fosgate subwoofer (enclosure built to fit under the front seat). BT audio connected head unit. In my stereo competition days clean power and a clean source were more critical than really expensive speakers (you could get away with more middle range speakers). That being said if you could do it all then even better! These cars are so loud that achieving the perfect sound stage is pretty much impossible.

Your setup is slick and having the speakers up high like that is nice.

No I didn't provide a secondary enclosure since the console is pretty air tight, however, that's a good idea, and I may revisit the speaker mounting and possibly provide a secondary enclosure. What material would you recommend to build a secondary speaker enclosure within the console?
BTW the speakers that I used were only $40 per pair.

I would just used more wood and use caulk to seal the boxes. Doesn't have to be pretty since it is all hidden under the console.

In a perfect world you use MDF but it is heavy. I would just use the pine you did and then seal with caulk and stuff some insulation in there. Should be pretty simple.

How much power does the head unit provide? You might want to consider a little amp as that power is much cleaner than a typical head unit amp. But if it works for your needs don't change up anything!

Thanks!! I have plenty of pine and lots of insulation so I'll put it on the "things to do list" ASAP.

Thanks Sarge! Great suggestion!

Here's what I've found so far from Crutchfield

No, just a mental picture in my minds eye. I am still saving pennies for the head unit and a new Ham unit before I can finish up the whole project. I probably won't be able to hear the fine acoustics over the rattling 3B and 35 year old body creaks anyway. :hmm: Unless I crank it up.
