I was not aware that SD has such a rat problem. This is making me second guess whether I really want to move out there for law school :hhmm:

Just were I store it, at my dads place just outside of Ramona about 40 miles north east of SD in the foothills. :hillbilly:
All 5-15 acre lots with a lot of brush. Of course the beach area has a lot of rats, some call them drunken college kids.;)

Another one bites the dust....

and the death toll keeps going up!

Jeez, that's a biggun!
:p

He's done arguing with that trap.

What bait worked?

I killed my first mouse ever, about a month ago. It was in a trap (exact same one as pictured above) I placed in my drivers footwell of my LX. I have never had a rodent problem anywhere, and the day I found mouse droppings in my truck, I was out for blood. When I looked in my wifes MDX (they had a smorgasboard in my wife's food wrapper cluttered kidmobile), which I had not been in for several days at least, I found a ton of mouse droppings, and ended up removing seats, console, pulling up carpet, etc... I also got one in the garage same night. No sign of any since, though I have left some poison bait out.

I swear, I felt more violated than the time, my neighbor scared of some tweakers rifling through my LX...

Thats not a big one...this wet rat was caught in our garage a month ago. We had three inches of rain in an 18 hour period, and this bugger was likely looking for shelter and food. Sorry, you are not welcome here Mr. Rat.

I was away and the :princess: sent me this photo and said "look what I found behind MY car which you get to clean up when you get home, dear". Measured 17" from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Not the biggest we have caught, but pretty close. Caught their mate a week later in the electric trap...so big it had jammed itself inside to get the peanut butter, and got zapped.

Firetruck, you may really want to think twice about the poison, as they tend to hoard it in places like your aircleaner, or other remote spots in your car, THEN they die; and yes this is based on my own nasty experience in several vehicles. Best not to use the poison IMHO, traps do much better in the end.

Steve

No rodent problems here, but I do find dead Jeeps occasionally. Nasty little buggers.

I use peanut butter.

the white things in the pic are bounce dryer sheets.

Momma is raging a battle inside the house on Centipedes. Killed a five incher two nights ago.

Mice and rats I can deal with. Centipedes not so much. Hope they don't end up in the truck! I'm not sure what I'd do if I was tooling along and suddenly a centipede slithered onto my hand from the steering wheel...

So I guess the claim that rodents don't like the smell of Bounce dryer sheets is nothing but an old wives tail.

Lucky for us, centipedes are only attacking the house. The kid loves to play with millipedes and tarantulas all day but we taught her to avoid the centipedes.

it is just unbelievable how many rodents can be around without one knowing it.
I am currently catching a mouse every time I put a spring trap in the garage and a rat everytime I put my fave Havehart out in the yard. Hard to even know they are around otherwise. I did manage to put a dent in my squirrel population though.
The dang things cost me my 80 plug wires last time in the truck and I was lucky it wasnt the main harness.
The spring traps are not all equal btw and you can tweak their sensitivity.
I rigged up a nightime camera system to see what was eating the bait (PB) off my spring trap without setting it off. Turns out it was a tiny mouse. Had to pull out the supersentitive old trap. Got him. He was also walkin straight through the HaveHart mesh (about 1/2" across, amazingly enough).

Ive had the same problem at home, we didnt even know we had them until we found a new bag of dog biscuits with a hole chewed in the bottom. My missus is a pet nut so baiting wasnt an option, even once the mouse has died they can poison other animals that try to eat the mouse.

So i got 2 spring traps and put them in the cupboard with peanut butter on the trigger, first day i got one, second day i got 4, third day i got 2, and none since.

The neighbours cat used to get under our house all the time, so we sealed it up to get her off our back, and i think they are living under there and there must be a hole the get through, our cats never seem to be able to catch them, so ive opened up under the house again to try and cull the population again.

Hopefully this is the end of the problem.. I just hope everyone is being careful with bait because as i said, if you have a pet dog or cat that finds the dead mouse it can harm them too.

I'm having similar issues. I had been successful keeping them out of the cab over the years, but now they found a way in. I believe it is the hole above the blower motor. I had found a nest built above and in it. There is a hole that is above that area, but I can't figure out how to cover the hole or where it leads. I don't know if it is under the cowl or behind the firewall. I suspect under the cowl as it is a horizontal surface. I am going to remove the cowl as well as I notice the PS is missing the plastic screens. FWIW, Irish Spring, dryer sheets and those deterrent pouches/bags usually work. I've had success with glue traps in the past too, but they avoided the glue traps I left in the cab.

The fresh air intake for your HVAC is where you suspect it is, under the cowling. Simply remove the blower then look up to the "light" If you suspect that is the ingress, simply put your HVAC into recirc mode before shutting down. That's the flap that blocks of any fresh air intake.

I've tried covering this fresh air intake hole with chicken wire but I don't think it worked as I catch inside the 80 frequently. The ratzapper works real well but they still stink up the inside :bang:

Also, check the square hole in the body, WAY in the rear, under the cargo area. They should be covered with plastic covers but one of mine fell off and this allowed a giant rat to go into my 80.

Another hole I closed up is at the firewall where the main ECU harness goes through. They ate through the rubber grommet and made it inside.

Still looking for more egress holes.....

Yeah, that is where they are coming in for sure. I removed the cowl today and the plastic covers are still there, but removed the one on the PS and put my camera down there and can see where the nest is coming up through the hole. I can't figure out how they got in there though. Only thing I can figure is maybe the recess for the hood hinges? I leave the hood open all the time to deter mice...not working obviously. I think I broke that flap latch on the intake when I removed their nest previously. I might try the chicken wire. I wasn't aware of the hole under the cargo area. I'll check it out. I looked at the firewall and can't see they chewed though any areas there to gain entry. I noticed droppings on top of the brake booster, but didn't see how they would have gotten through where it comes into the cab under the dash. I set a bunch of traps after cleaning everything out today, but waiting to remove their nest until tomorrow. We have been battling them in my wife's Subaru as well. It is maddening. We have cats and apparently they are not helping out. I just drove the 80 last weekend and everything looked great, so they work fast.

It's one thing when they're invading your truck in the garage. It's a whole other war when you're camping in said truck and they start visiting you in the night. Has happened to me in the desert a few times. A few nights of that and you really see RED.

Yeah, we love living in the high desert of the mountains, but they are aggressive and fast out here. I need to thin the herd of vehicles we have, which might help. I'm going to buy one of those noisemakers that work on a trickle charge to see if that helps too.

I tried these on 3 vehicles and so far so good. I leave them on all the time as I was turning one off and on as I was afraid of draining my battery. I went and looked under the hood during the day while it was off and surprised a giant rat. Since that time I've left them on day and night with great success and the batteries does get drained as I'm driving or starting every car once or twice a week.
