And here i though i had her cancer free but when i removed the transmission hump cover i found more.

Luckily i was able to find a donor in "better" shape. The sides are good but the top is not

So I am going to cut out the parts i need and weld them into place. 2 wrongs do make a right.

Passenger side hump cover patch completed. Can i just say I HATE doing rust abatement. It is too tedious for my ADHD.

Well it finally happened. I had enough time to get the motor out.

It has been a long arduous process. One that admittedly should not have taken as long as it did. I got the bell housing off, the clutch out the motor mounts out. All in all it was good
IMG_20210821_120856_820.jpg

The cheepo engine stand i got is not big enough for Uma's big heart. In fact the block is longer then the legs are. And it starts to lean forward when i take the tension off of the chain. But at least it is out now and i can start really working on it.

Now that i have more pieces off and out of the way i got the motor mounts a transmission mount cleaned up and the bell housing. Gave a little TLC and sprayed them with a coat of color.

Nice thread. I'm enjoying following your impressive build.

I just wish parts were going on, instead of still coming off
I hear ya. I think that there is a mathematical formula somewhere that the amount of parts coming off increases exponentially the amount of money going out! Have faith. It will come together and be on the road again before too long.

Good news bad news. Good news is i have a goal to get it back together and painted by November for my daughter's high school car show. Parts are coming off, getting cleaned and painted. Bad news my oil slinger inside of my timing cover broke. In 3 spots. By the looks of it, it has been broken for some time and has been floating around in my timing cover. I can't seem to find a replacement so i am considering fixing it i.e. welding it back together. I hope that doesn't create more headaches for me in the future.

Side note if anybody has a slinger from a 69 F motor please contact me.

I think you're very lucky that was just floating in there... if that had gotten snagged in the timing gears I can only imagine the damage.

Yesterday during my lunch i managed to piece it back together. I cleaned it up today. There are still a couple of cracks that need to be dealt with. And also hopefully it holds up.

For reasons i would rather not mention i have had to pick up a second job. Working 2 jobs i haven't had a day off in 23 days. Today being a holiday i got off from my first job, and i am not available to work mondays at my second job so i used today to get some work done on Uma.
20210906_104330.jpg

I pulled the head, and valve cover, and oil pan.
IMG_20210906_105447_646.jpg

All of which are going to go get a hot bath, cleaned and a fresh coat of paint.
IMG_20210906_105447_576.jpg

My natural ADHD tendencies are just to tear everything apart and not pay attention to how they are supposed to go back together.
IMG_20210906_105447_637.jpg

But i fought those tendencies and forced myself to label ALL of the bolts, pushrods and the valve rockers as they came off.

I laud your repair of the slinger, but I'd get a new/used one. The potential of that slinger to break and do damage is too high.

Yeah I'm going to replace it. In fact I found someone local to me who might actually have one from one of his may "core motors" as he put it that i can have if i do the work to get to it

My son keeps asking how he can earn money, to which my response is do some wire wheeling on the land cruiser.

I figure it has a couple of benefits. One he gets to work on it. 2 it teaches him the value of work. 3 he will eventually be the future owner of Uma when i die.

Even though i "cleaned" it there was still some grime left over and spending time on it with a brass wire wheel and my drill isn't going to damage it very much if at all.

The battery died but he is doing a fairly good job cleaning it up. This to will be going back to its original paint color

I've been getting some work done. When i last painted the valve cover I don't know why i didn't prime it so all of the paint had been coming off. Got it cleaned PRIMED and painted.

I put the head into the parts washer and didn't think it was clean enough. I found a machine shop and asked if they would clean up the head and replace the seals for me. I had low hopes for the flywheel but took it to them anyway to see if it could be turned. Come to find out it came out remarkably well ready for when i get the chance to buy a clutch.

Good progress!

The freeze plug (2nd pix in reply 74) on the right side of the block (as you face the engine fan) looks pretty rough. Are you going to replace or at least carefully inspect them all?

Yes i am going to really inspect them but i am running into a problem now with the head, and need to consider my options.

I took my head into a machine shop to have a once over done. They were better at cleaning it up then I would be
IMG_20210915_155811_646.jpg

There was a scare that they were cracked. But after a magna flux test and a pressure test it got a clean bill of health. Not perfect but still good. They replaced the seals and gave it back to me.
IMG_20210915_155811_673.jpg

Me and my son spent quite a bit of time getting the block ready. Brass wire wheeling the entire thing and cleaning the old head gasket material off of the top of the block.
IMG_20210915_155811_669.jpg

I got some primer and paint down on the block getting one step closer. This weekend the head is going on and should have the whole engine reassembled. It needs a new clutch to go with the resurfaced flywheel then she will get the heart reinstalled.

When school tells me to come and get you on a short day already then you start to feel better before we even get home you get put to work doing the grubby work that i don't want to do but know it needs to get done.

Getting ready to put the head back on tomorrow along with the push rod cover, and oil pan. I am waiting on a slinger to show up next week. And i am about 3 weeks away from a clutch and stabbing it back in.

I must say masking is not my favorite. Cleaned the top of the pistons with a brass wire wheel and a gasket removal wheel on the top of the block.

I took the oil filler neck and the oil pressure sensor to get those cleaned up as well.

So i have set myself a dead line of Halloween to be done. Her is a picture of the block progress. The head is on, thermostat housing is on, alternator bracket is on. Hopefully today sees the addition of the timing cover and harmonic balancer.

I am really liking this color.

These are the last of the gasket kit that i got from cool cruisers of Texas. I see the light at the end of the he tunnel but i am still not sure if it is a train approaching or the end.
