7:1 first gear ratio in SM420 rather vs. 4.85:1 in H55F. I don't have much rock crawling experience, but I would like to take this truck down to some of the crawly trails in the states.
The overdrive of the H55F might not be usable with big tires without a regear whereas the 1:1 final ratio in the 420 should be good with 4.11s and ~35s.
There is a SM420 in a truck with a seized engine on the family farm, so cost would essentially be limited to adapters (and rebuild parts if needed).
Plus, I'm a bit of a contrary fellow. While everyone else lusts after 3Bs, 12HTs, 1HDTs and H55Fs, I cast my gaze elsewhere.

I've never owned a 420, but my 465 is awful for around town. Sure it's doable, and you get used to it, but it's awful. Of late I've been driving the blue Pig with the Toyota transmission...it is SO nice to be able to downshift while going through a turn.

Hmmmm, I was sort of justifying clunkiness with "it's not going to be a daily driver", but awful is a strong word. I suppose if I didn't go with a non-toyota tranny, I could use the adapter money towards a regear option instead.

and 420s are clunkier than 465s. plus there is a lack of parts if something happens. at least 465s are a dime a dozen. i had one, sent it and the adapters to mate it to a toy xfer case with a builder rig i sold to go toy 4spd in the pickle.

Well re-gear and H55 won't be cheap.

If you have access to the 420, sounds like it will be several thousand $ cheaper for you...

Suitable H55Fs came in HJ60s to Canada, so they are out there. If not an SM420, I might drop the 2FE and auto into the 55 and swap a manual into the 62 for street duty. The manual would get much better city mileage I think, and I do kinda like an auto off road.... Plenty of time to make the call though. I'm loving the 2FE even more now that it has free-flowing exhaust. :grinpimp:

Well Spot has a date with the Sweetgrass/Coots border crossing this weekend, then off to the family farm back east about a week later. :)

Hey RockDoc

Just found your thread and I'm subscribed. I recently picked up a 71 Pig (from Golden) and I'll be doing some of the similar modifications as you, except I'm replacing my F with a 2H.

Would love to come by and see your truck someday. Always good to know of other Pigs in Cowtown (sounds like a bad country song).

Oh, and I'm jealous of your lack of rust!

So she runs now?

 Nope, something like this.

Cool, there is another fellow Duke who I understand is in Calgary part-time who is a pig guy too. Mine will likely be in Manitoba for a bit, as I will be seasonally.

SM420 + plate adpator will be your cheapest way to get max low gears. I'd designate the rig as off road 95% of the time due to the driveability.
Orion will be middle of the road costwise & prolly your best option if you want to daily drive it.
2 of my trucks run SM420's & I like them okay but mine are off road mostly & budget dictated my choices. There are other more expensive options out there so you'll hafta price them out & choose what your budget allows.

So she runs now?

We need some current pictures dude!

no, not running, it's engine less currently.

 I thought Spot was your 55?

it will be rockdoc's this weekend.

i dont see a pig anywhere...just a couple of wanna be's

I think rockdoc was showing how he will get the piggie home across the border.
He is delayed 1 day to a screwup on my part in getting the paperwork to the border.
