Yeah well about that... I found a massive vacuum leak where the EGR pipe attaches to the intake manifold so I fixed that and now the truck runs like crap. Hunting idle, almost dying when you come to a stop, spitting and sputtering when you're barely on the throttle. BUT, it's runs like a scalded dog when you're on the throttle (as much as a 22RE can anyway). It feels like it has double the power it did before. So, I'm really thinking TPS since it's throttle dependent. Gonna get one down the road since we don't have one I stock and see if that helps it.

EGR valve stuck open? The valve should be closed at idle IIRC. Could also be modulator or BVSV.

Possible. I thought I had it fixed with a new TPS but it was still running rough on the way home and seems to have a new problem where it shuts off if you put the clutch in while cruising on the hwy. Interesting when it's raining and you're on the hwy in downtown Atlanta with all the maniacs. This truck has the old style throttle body where it has the stupid reed valve thing.

I also realized that while the PO put new plugs and wires on, he reused the old cap and rotor so I picked one of each up today and I'm gonna throw those on and see how it does.

Should've had enough time by now, but have you reset the ECU? Leave the battery disconnected overnight next time you have a chance and see if that helps anything.

If you're having EGR issue like I was on the Taco, your problems may just be beginning. Although a 22RE has nowhere near the emission controls that a 3RZ has so maybe you'll get lucky.

If it is EGR related I'll just delete it. You can buy the block off plates with gaskets for like 15 bucks. It's an 88 so it doesn't have to have emissions.

I'll try the ecu thing tonight.

A freeze plug works great to plug the egr hole on the back of the plenum. You will just need to drill it out to a common size.

Yeah I've heard that. I think the block off plates from LCE have one for there too that just uses a regular gasket like what's on there now. If I could do all this without pulling the intake it would be ideal.

It seems like the more stuff I fix on this truck the worse it runs. :bang:

@pappy is there any way to check if the EGR is stuck open or closed without taking it off? Pull the vacuum line?

Anybody have a later model throttle body laying around? Trying to eliminate all the possible stuff that could be keeping my truck from shutting off.

Well, somebody offered me up some money for Marty and I think I'm gonna let him go. Just seems like every time I fix something I have 3 more problems... :crybaby:

I appreciate all the comments and help. I'll have another truck one day. Next on my list is an 80, then a 40...

What, I didn't know a 40 was in the plans.

We've always wanted a 40. Just want to wait until our daughter is a little older. It won't be a crawler or anything. More like a weekend mall crawler. Especially now that she has been walking past @super40's amazingly beautiful truck sitting in our garage the last couple of days, I think it's a done deal...

Ah boo. I was hoping you'd get it all sorted out. Looks like a gem. Sounded like my 85 when I got it. Every time I replaced or fixed anything, 2-3 more issues arise. But these trucks are high maintenance even tho it's a yota.

Hardly post on mud but I am always on here. Since we all like pics..Here are my babies on our last camping trip.

85 still burns oil. Slowly buying parts before major rebuild.

'78 40. Everything u see on it was done by previous owner. Runs and rides better than my 85.

Wish my FJ40 rode better than my '85 4Runner. Wish my '85 4Runner ran better than my FJ40.

Nice trucks. I feel like if I had a better platform to start with I would be more interested in keeping it. I just sunk a ton of money I into my last truck and only got back about 1/3 of what I had in it. I could see this one going that way pretty quickly... Just more than I want to take on right now. I need a daily driver where I can turn the ignition and just drive. Not have to stop on the way to work at 6 am and have to mess with it so it will stay running. Even if I dumped a ton of time and money into this truck it would still be beat up, bed is not good, etc, etc, etc. Time to cut my losses. If I was buying it for a trail truck it wouldn't matter but it's not.

Well, ol Marty is on his way to his new home in South Carolina. Gonna be a young man's (first?) truck. Hopefully he'll get patched up and put through the paces. Here's to some good times with his new owners.
