Its a fair amount of work getting those lined up, but a lot easier than repairing a rusted steel tub. Is that a stretched tub or stock length?

Yes, I went with the 10 in stretch. Hopefully it works out....

@White Stripe I have read through your build a couple times. A ton of great information. Thanks.

ALH. Bullet proof VW TDI with lots of room for HP/TQ gains.

I'll be watching this build as it is something that should be done more often.
I'll bet you get better than stock performance and twice, yes twice the mileage.

I was thinking about your tranny.
How is it geared compared to the VW tranny?

If I recall the ALH with a manual does about 2500 RPM at 60ish MPH.
I haven't had an ALH for years.

what was the wait time on getting that tub?

They had it done and on hand when I called, so I had it in a couple weeks. Aqualu was great to deal with.

Thanks, I am hoping for twice the mileage! My tuner said when he flashed the computer that it should be 180hp/300ftlbs now. And he said he can tune it more if I want more. Hopefully we will see soon, how it performs.

I put an NV3550 in from a 2004 Wrangler. I don't know what a manual Jetta would've been on rpm's. The donor car was an auto. It ran 1900 rpm at 55 mph. I have the 55 mph and 70 mph tach numbers wrote down at home. I tried to match them on gearing. Since the Jetta would get 50 mpg. I was hoping VW knew the sweet spot for the motor to cruise down the road. I do have a couple different 3rd members I can throw in to play with it when it's on the road....

A word of caution- I put mine on and was so excited about having it driveable: it’s still in this basic condition 9 months later. I can’t help myself, it’s so much fun to drive I don’t want to tear it back down. It’s good problem to have.

I hear that! I have been collecting parts for a while.. For the next couple months I have 2 very awesome friends who are helping me on Thursdays and Saturdays. So we are really trying to put a huge dent in her!!

When I first saw that tiny motor sitting in the front of your FJ40, I was like , "Wtf is he thinking?!" Then I read 180 HP and 330 lb ft of torque, and was like, " OK those numbers will work! " Looking forward to reading about how it actually performs!

Lol. That makes 2 of us!! I keep telling people that on paper it looks really impressive. I hope paper isn't lying!!

I will have to do some searching and see if I can find them. Thanks. I have a 98 4 Runner for parts I thought about taking the link suspension out of the rear and put it in this 40. Right now I just want to get it on the road first.

The paint code is RAL 6026
I don't remember the name... My wife picked it out, she wanted it a little lighter than the original Toyota green.
Do you have any comparison pictures with that original Rustic Green 621?

I will take a couple for you. Probably tomorrow.

@-MaTTi- Here are a couple photos for you. The darker is the factory rear door upper. I hand buffed it a little to clean it up. Hope these help.

@fjdiesel Nice work! I’m thinking about going tdi in my 40. I might message you on your setup and lessons learned, etc.

@daniel.watters Thanks, ask away. I am hoping, heavy on the hoping, to have it on the road this coming spring. But I will answer anything I can now to help.
