Mazda REPU Trailer Build

@Godwin and I picked up this trailer yesterday as a package deal to get a canoe. My dad has been looking for a Tandem Canoe for a while to replace a well used Royalex Dagger that he’s been using for field work since the early ‘90s.

We talked about going to get it and I told him that I wanted the trailer if we bought the whole package to get the canoe. It was too cheap to pass up.

The trailer was made from a ‘74-‘77 Mazda Rotary pickup. It’s very solid and pretty cool.

I’m not entirely sure what the “build” of this trailer will be, but I know it needs tires, wheel bearings and a tailgate.

The truck was sold at Jay Marks Mazda of Houston Texas.

I went ahead and ripped off the rotten 2x4 structure that was used to house the boats.

The axle of the trailer appears to be the original Mazda axle with the chunk cut out of it and a piece of tube welded in its place.

As for the hubs, I think that they’re trailer hubs, but I haven’t taken anything apart to verify that yet.

Any information on the wheel bearing/ hub situation that can be offered would be appreciated.
Right now I’m thinking that they are just standard trailer hubs and I could probably get wheel bearings from Tractor Supply or E trailer.

The thought of converting it to 6x5.5” to match our trucks has also occurred to me, but that probably won’t happen.

Looks more like a too narrow to use under that bed trailer axle got widened. Depending on how you're going to use the trailer the bearings may or may not be too small for off-road use.

I always buy name brand bearings & seals from a bearing supply house. Koyo, Timken, & SKF are my preferences. Pack them with CVJ/Birfield grease (I use Redline CV-2) and you'll likely never need to mess with them again. I never want to be that guy on the side of the road fixing trailer wheel bearings......

I have a Datsun truck bed of a similar vintage and I replace the whole axle and hubs in one shot for a very reasonable price (including shipping). Trailer hubs now share same bolt pattern.

I’ll see if I can dig up the info.

$349 shipped last year from Southwest Wheel in dallas. That was for an axle complete with complete hubs and u-bolts etc…

Ian is spot on with SwW. I have purchased a few of there axles over the years.
