Then I built some u bolt skid plates. I added a piece of dom to the center to keep it from colapsing. I made up a jig to make sure they all lined up.

Tailgate is almost done. I am still deciding on hinges. I may use the barn door ones like others have done. I had to add another piece to the rear sill to get the door to sit flush.

I also corrected the spare tire carrier. I always liked it but it was weak on the thin sheet metal quarter and a 31" tire would hit the body when open. I extended it 6" with a sleeve of 1" dom and a top of 1.25" dom. It should now open all the way without hitting the corner and allow me to drop the tailgte. It should be good up to a 36" tire without hanging out past the side of the body. I always hated it sticking out and rubbing on trees and stuff when you get too close. I have missed the tailgate of my old 85 4runner when we stop for lunch. Great place to make a sammy!

I struggled with the spare tire carrier latch today! 3.5 hours later it was installed after many holes drilled and tapped!

For that long patch piece across the bottom, did you use a break? I need to make that same piece for my tailgate but don't have a break.
I clamped the middle piece on my work table and used a hammer to bend it. The side pieces I used my Swag press brake for the middle bend and then clamped it on the table to bend the short bend. I used a piece of 3/8 stock to hold the sheet metal in place as it was clamped down and then slowly used a hammer to bend the edge. works pretty good for thin sheet metal.

Since the Ruffstuff latches would not work, I went to plan "b". I used to right side latches to make a left and right. Then made up some catch pieces. Turned out well and gate does not rattle. 31 bolts holding it all together!

I found some cables that come with shoulder bolts that work well. Dorman and others have same part number.

Then I made some mounts. It will support 250 lbs! I sat on it!
