Love this build! Any idea what your fuel economy is now that you have been daily driving it? I have the lq4 with a 4l80e auto and 35s and get around 14-15 highway and 10 around town. typically average around 13 per tank. Been thinking about taking it somewhere for a tune to see if i could bump it up at all. If you still have that extra high clearance oil pan I might be interested. I haven't had an issue yet with the stock one, but it is a little tighter than i'd like.

Great looking truck. :steer:

Been making progress, took three steps back, fuel tank is f***ked.....full of rust clogged pre filter...rubber lines did not appreciate ethanol...dro0ped tank...flushed cleaned etc...

Hey there. Just read this post. Maybe someone else has pointed this out but the fj60 had a recall on the fuel tank and toyota will replace it for you if it hasn't been done yet on yours. Something worth looking into.

Thanks for the compliments, fuel economy is 13mpg doesn't matter if I am easy on it or hard on it almost no variation , on the interstate I get 75 mph at 2200, i think it needs a little more rubber overdrive, it's on 32s now but I think it will take 35s, i am running it pretty hard around town still adjusting to have 400+ hp,seats did make more leg room as they will go further back, awesome upgrade, need to remove the Toyota seat belt's as the BMW seats have their own. the previous owner had the tank recall done, it seems to be good to go now but does not like it when it gets below a quarter tank...it will stumble and lose rpm when romping on it.....need to get the a/c workin and pop the windshield out, got some rust in the A pillar....need to score a front bumper from @reevesci for my 8274, when I do that it will get the dual batteries.......

Interesting we are getting very similar MPG. I vary rarely go over 65 because I am at 2400rpms at 65. 4.88 gears in the axles are probably too low. Would love to be able to cruise at 70 at 2000rpm. I have a scan gauge so I can see my mpg current and average at all times. When I romp on it it is incredibly low, so it is somewhat surprising you aren't seeing a difference.

Time for an update I suppose, was driving it daily and kept smelling coolant, was noticing what looked like spray mist markings on the side of the radiator, upon closer inspection I could see that the tank is leaking a just a little bit, this is a GRIFFIN radiator, so I called griffin to see what they would do, radiator came with a 2 year warranty when I called it was 2 years and 1 week since I had bought it, never mind the fact that it sat in the shop for 14 months as the truck was being built, they said I could send it to them and they would take a look at it but no promise of getting it fixed.....I have a bunch of time in custom mounts and tig welding, oh yeah and since I welded it the warranty is void. So I take it to a local radiator shop and they feel that they can fix it with epoxy, all 4 corners were leaking and the guy said that he regularly sees the griffin radiators in there with the same issues, his quote was " they don' build em like they used to" so I get it epoxied and reinstalled lasted about 2 days and I am smelling coolant again, pull it out take it back to the shop and he says he will refund my money but that he can't do anything more for me. He offers to get me a new radiator from Northern Radiators built in Wisconsin a much better quality piece, so I am waiting on that to come in now, if it looks worthy get the new mounts fabbed and get it back together, I have some pictures I will update this post with later....
Missing my truck a lot but got some good stuff coming from @reevesci so hopefully it will be back together asap!!!

How about this?

I've had the best luck with quality radiators running the 4 core brass tank type (OEM replacement). I had the top neck on the radiator resized to match the 99 pickup top radiator hose 5.7, and I had the lower neck on the radiator moved to the far passenger side of the radiator to clear the fan shroud.... been in the truck a few years now...

Spectra Premium.... I bought another one for a spare but have not had issues with the one above I've modified.

Rock Auto shows it too...

I only plan to run these type of radiators for the duration...as long as I can get one if needed.

Got some more done today, transfer case problems seem to be resolved, adjusted the shifter linkage and it is much happier now, shifts smoothly and stays in gear...bled brakes for what seemed like hours, the stock proportioning valve was trashed and had a bunch of rust in it, it was trying to flush the rust through the system, completely disassembled entire brake system and cleaned all lines and bled some more, pedal is getting better and the brakes are working but it feels like there is still air in the system, throttle response has vastly improved since changing out the fuel pump, the first one I got was bad....still a ways to go but it's getting closer....got some video today and some more poser pics......
Hungry??
Have some donuts....

What did you use for mufflers?

Great build. Very inspiring. I have my 60 stripped to the frame, LQ4 (entire wrecked 2002 GMC) and GM NV4500 waiting. I was wondering if you would be willing to take some measurements on motor placement? It looks like your shifter comes up at a good spot and I would like to replicate it if you are happy with where it is.

Any help would be great and much appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Following this build. I am also in VA(Northern) and have an 84 that I may like to do a similar build on. Sounds like I may need to up my tools and my fabricating game before I begin :-) Is your buddy's shop willing to do another one of these builds? :)

Sent you a pm.

Been a long while since an update, have had issues with the fuel system from the beginning so I got a long range tank with an in tank pump from @orangefj45 been working to get it swapped in making slow progress, had to take out the tail pipes to make it work so exhaust will have to be redone, heres a couple of pix...

Here is the fuel pump cartridge, it had to be cut and extended for the bigger tank...never mind the booger welds... going to see @tmxmotorsports today to get the sending unit extension welded in... the wire in my mig machine is too thick (.030 )and I don't have a tig welder that works yet...

Nice! Can you take a pic looking down the pump hole? Is there a tray on the bottom?
Yeah there is a well/sump in the bottom of the tank, I will get a pic later...
