so have the longfield 30 spline birfs been improved for road use? I will be needing
birfs soon but drive on road and offroad.....probably like 5k per year on road. I was looking on the site to see if anyone had used them and could give me some feedback.
thanks in advance

Bobby says 60k miles, so they would be good for 12 years, and then you can send them back in to be rebuilt.

I've not had a bit of trouble with mine. Love em!

I spoke with Bobby when I picked them up at his shop and he confirmed the increased hardness giving the axles a longer life. He also mentioned that he'd be happy to rebuild them if they ever wore out.

Bobby and his wife are good people, the community is lucky to have them. Highly recommend supporting his products!

At 5K of HWY use a year I would not hesitate to use the longs.

Personally when my OEM's go bad I'm replacing with Longs and I drive 15K+ per year. The way I see it is they are much cheaper than OEM and stronger. And at 157K on my truck by the time I need new Birfs a set of Longs will probably last me through the rest of the trucks life as a DD. Then the drivetrain will probably go under my 40.

polar bear: did you use the drive flange on the long site? If so how did that work out as far as the install goes......looks like you have to drill.

I was also thinking of maybe taking out the front DS unless I was going wheeling which is like 1 time a month if I am lucky.
any thoughts or ideas? Thanks for the replies already.

I actually went with part time hubs. People will argue against it without going part time on the transfer case, but I just figure if the axles are unloaded during daily driving there will be less wear. They still spin while unlocked, but there is no load on them. I like how it wheels in AWD versus part time.

I used FJ60 hubs, and the axles were grooved to accept the hubs. Apparently Bobby will groove them for you if you just request it when you place the order.

The only downside to the conversion was the loss of ABS due to the lack of tone ring on the longs (the idiot light on the dash bugs me and I'm too lazy to pull the dash to remove it).

I've heard reports that they can be had with tone rings now however. Might want to look into it if ABS is important to you.

I have the same thought process. I am set up the same way. I think it drives great is 2wd. The one and only thing I don't like about it is losing the awd for the rain. Boggers don't like wet roads.

I plan to order a set next month and in my research and talking with Boddy have found that 1) They are harder now and can last 60-80K 2) The ABS tone ring will press onto the longs off your stock birfs thus retaining ABS in AWD.

Cant wait to get mine and get rid of the racket when turning. :censor:

I've got my old birfs in a box. Have to take a look at those rings. hmmmm...

wonder why ..

Nitro in the same boat .. ?

Not sure it really matters, have not heard of anyone breaking a Long in a 80 yet. I think the 3rd becomes the next fuse in the front end once the birfs are upgraded.

Does anybody know if the drive flange on the longfield website even works on an 80? It just describes it as "Toyota drive flange".

Just for reference, ONE Toyota birf carries the same retail price as a SET of Longs. I will be putting them in my mini one day. :D

In talking with Bobby he said to run the stock long spline 80 drive flange. Said there was no need to run the ones on his site.

Are the "long spline" flanges from specific years of 80's? Op has a 91 3fe.

Yeah I think the OP is best to call Longfield, they have always been more than happy to help me when ever I have had questions.

I believe the longer spline drive flanges are from 94+
