I'm in. Looks great so far.

Question: as you are doing pretty much a frame-up rebuild, how will you protect the frame when it comes time to do that? Urethane coating?

I haven't really thought that much about it. When it comes time, I will have to do a bit more research on the subject. I've never used products such as por15 or rustoleum because they are hard to get here in Aus. On previous projects all I did was to etch prime it followed by a couple of coats of an industrial satin black

Mate what a killa project ,
Great work so far cant wait to see the end product.

You don't still have all the panel work from the front end of the VDJ79 do you? If you do and you want to sell it send me a PM

Adding a stiffener to the new chassis as per old chassis.

Finishing off the power steering box. The outside of the chassis is double plated. I'm adding some pipe to prevent the chassis crushing in when torquing the box down.

Bits of pipe I used.

Added the tray/body mounts. I cut these off the old chassis. They ended up working really well.

I've got maybe 4 hours left then its off to blast n paint.

Here's a question for the group. What do you guys (and gals) recommend for a good undercoat and top coat for this chassis. It has to be a good rust preventative and also be wear resistant. I am willing to import a product if it's superior to what I can get here(Aus). Cheers

Screw POR15 try KBS coatings Aussie made
Welcome to KBS Coatings
Same stuff just made here or get in hot dip galvanized then powder coated

If you plan on beaching or driving on salted roads get it galvanised but if your out bush GMH black with a good two pack rust primer would be my vote. :)

Thanks guys,
I think galvanizing is out of the question for me, as the closest place to me is still 500km away. As for salt, I try and stay away from salt water all together. Most of my rust come from cow poo getting flung up on the chassis and diffs.

I'm really liking the KBS stuff. Might have to give it a go. Cheers for the replies

Yeah cow poo does like to start rust that's for sure everyday I had fresh cow poo on my hj75 from my bosses farm driveway. I have heard good things about KBS so if you use it I would love to see the results

Locked best take your time and get it right the first time as nothing s***s me more than going back into something that I already rebuilt 6 months earlier.
Do it once and do it right. :)

True dat. This is something a lot of people around here have a hard time comprehending. I won't be skimping on the drive train but performance mods will have to wait. It's getting all new brakes/bearings and bushes throughout. Amayama has been getting a lot of my money lately lol.
